            Theme: Reminiscence
              Word of the day: Perky

Do you still remember those good old days? They might be days which saw off events which made you squirmed with embarrassment upon realization of your own innocence and naivety. They might be moments when you mischievously chased after the wandering flock of chickens with your mighty water gun.

These were childhood times in which you have long been hankering for upon stepping into the adulthood full of doubts and uncertainties. Reminiscence has had the better of us and this meeting came as a much-needed outlet for those pangs of nostalgia.

The urge to turn back the clock back to childhood times surged with the Table Topics Session invoking our memories of the favourite Disney movies, the coyness exhibited in the maiden confession and the self-made cards dedicated to our parents with strokes of crayons and colour pencils.

Aptly, all the assignment speeches presented seemed to remind us to always revisit the roots and basic tenets of the life.

It was kick-started with a brilliant sharing by CC Fatimah about the Secrets of Happiness. Its relevance couldn't be anymore emphasized given that we are in an era shaped by complexities and intricacies.
 “Happiness isn't a destination but a journey.”

In times where sleep is often considered as a time-consuming luxury, it was Sara’s speech which reminded us the importance of sleep.
"Lack of sleep causes mood swing and overall tiredness"

Lastly, Yew Yi gave his take on moderation with the speech titled as The Best of Both World.

"Moderation gives you an unrivalled perspective on things in times of conflicts."

As usual, refreshment is the session which you can always rest your expectation upon. Words and compliments can hardly do justice to those cakes except churning it mindfully with silent appreciation.

Then, we had CC Dr. Tilla all the way from KL Tamil Toastmaster Club who played the role as a General Evaluator. She was thorough, helpful, perceptive and notably graceful in her delivery.
Besides, the meeting was also attended by guests: Yee Yuen and Zhi Soung who shared with us their insights on several matters.

Things viewed from different lens are in fact needed for the club to grow from strength to strength.

Theme: What's in a name

Word of the day: Allusion

Ever wonder why people address you by your name or why you were named in such a way… your name?

The past meeting explored on this perplexing issue with the theme “What is in a name”Accordingly, everyone in the Introduction Session was to share or guess the meaning behind their name. Some were profoundly enlightening and some were cheeky. As a whole, the session was an eye-opener.

Next, the Table Topic Session took an unexpected twist. As requested by the innovator – TM Chen Long, each person was to write an adjective about himself or herself on a piece of paper, which would be the topic for the table topic speakers. The speaker was to pick out the person who wrote the adjective and of course, with justifications. Needless to say, the speaker’s imagination and thinking capacity would have to be stretched to nowhere without any investigation. It was fun. Kudos to Chen Long.

During the session of Project Speech, CC Yik Ming presented on peculiar facts about our body in which we had often taken for granted. You might never realized that the speed of sneezing can reach the mind-boggling 165km/h and the metabolic waste-urine possesses healing effects until listening to Yik Ming’s well-crafted speech. You definitely never thought your fragile strands of hair, when numbered to 150000, can support the weight of 2 elephants!

Fatimah was on song.
CC Wei Chin was
presenting on the vexing social issue.

Next, CC Wei Chin shed lights on   teenage abortion- a social issue   that have been long lurking yet remains unresolved while CC Fatimah gave us a picture about her High School’s Farewell Party in Pakistan. Such is the beauty of Toastmaster. People get to expose themselves to diverse opinions and culture.

Delicious food with nice chit-chat

As always, the refreshment lived up to its expectation, probably beyond that. Generous spread of delicious cakes on the table was simply mouth-watering and appetite-seducing. Million thanks, Fatimah!

The satisfying refreshment was followed by fruitful evaluation with CC Yew Choong taking helm as a General Evaluator.

TM Chern Ken was taking the role as
Toastmasters of the Evening.
Everyone was engrossed in Yik Ming's presentation.

Keep your mind open and you shall be enlightened. Wisdom comes when we start to appreciate everything in life, be it good or bad, be it big or small. Toastmasters, as a sharing stage, provide just that.

Theme : Halloween

Word of the day : Nyctophobia

On safe land!

Though it was Halloween, there was no sight of ghastly – looking beings. Thank God. All were safe from the deadly bite of the Walking Dead.

The meeting was started off with a brief round of introduction, with each and every one sharing their experience of Nyctophobia (Word of the Day). Instead of letting the fear to rule the day, the joy and laughter had the last say.

Character aside, Wei Chin's attire was too
 powered by Pocahontas.

As for the Table Topic Session, we learnt that the most torturous prank one can ever play on another is to wake somebody up in the middle of the night for no reason. Indeed, this prank was the most annoying of its kind. (Sorry to know that you have been through this before TM Yahya!)

Next, CC Wei Chin portrayed how her favourite cartoon character –Pocahontas inspired her triumphs over the men.

Lastly, when asked which types of ghosts scared her most, TM Shafinas shared with us her real-life supernatural encounter in a jungle during a camping trip. Immediately, the room plunged into a pin-drop silence. That was the first time that the atmosphere dipped below zero-degree Celsius since the audience had learnt the theme of the meeting. Lesson learnt. Never fool around in places like jungle.

Nicholas. A caring lad.
For the project speech, TM Pei San surged to the stage and shared with us her first-time cooking experience. Being inspired by her boyfriend who could handle household chores well, Pei San decided to make the very first step into the kitchen and come out with something edible. Despite those botched attempt (i.e. fish slipping away from hand, egg turning into a charred scrap), she never stopped grabbing the chance to improve herself. Finally, she got the long-awaited admiration and praises from her loved one. Currently, she is available for consultation over cooking matters.
.

Next, TM Nicholas highlighted the plight of stray animals. Being moved by their piteous state, Nicholas spoke with conviction, urging all to consider giving those poor creatures a chance while one does have a choice of s splashing lavishly on those fine breeds.

Kevin. The family guy.
Attempting his tenth speech, TM Kevin shared with us the strong bonding with her mom after having gone through various hard times together. It was glad to know Kevin’s mother made it through the cancerous illness after much heart-wrenching moments. Though Kevin’s speech was subsequently failed by Dr. Devi given that what was at stake, still, the speech wasn't short of a compassionate and a value-laden one. Good try and keep trying!

Lastly, CC Fatimah educated the audience about the making of the leather. Interestingly, she even shared with us ways to remove the offending odour of newly bought leather-made products.

After an energizing refreshments with delicious cakes, came the fruitful evaluation driven by the General Evaluator- CC Malcome, the ever energetic lad. Notably, CC Yik Ming presented a detailed grammarian report that benefitted the audience.

Malcome, the Handsome.

Syafinas on supernatural encounter

Dr. Devi, the Devil's advocate in the Evaluation Session.

Yahya, the pranked.

Meeting No. 137

Theme: Holiday Traditions
Word of the Day: Joy

When we think of holiday, there must be a joyful time. We step out from study and relax. What is your unique holiday traditions in your family?

The Toastmaster of the Evening, Fatima led us by sharing our holidays traditions among our members and guests. We got to know the traditions of different background.

Table Topics Master, Pei San did a wonderful job for her first attempt! CC Yik Ming volunteered himself as the first table topics speaker with the topic, "Who will you spend your holiday with?". The audience were excited with the topic and expected some secrets to be shared with us from Yik Ming. However, he would spend his holiday with his best friend, Kevin by watching horror movie in the cinema.

Next, the best friend of Yik Ming, CC Kevin had his topic to reply on Yik Ming's invitation: "How do you spend your holiday?" Kevin rejected Yik Ming's invitation because he has to complete his assignments.

The table topics session continued with guests, Yahya Imran and Yee Yuan. Both of them spoke very well. Guest Yee Yuan became the Best Table Topics Speaker. Well done!

Moving on, our new members TM Chern Ken and TM Mhiruna delivered their icebreaker speeches. Chern Ken told us that he is a shy person. However, after joining toastmasters, he will transform himself. Not shy, but shine! TM Mhiruna let us know more about herself and her family. She loves cooking!

Scope of the speech from CC Sara is wide. This time she spoke about volcano! She demonstrated how volcano works.

We had an special occasion by ACS CL Jing Yi who presented a toast to a humble teacher. The teacher
has guided the club members for many years and she is none other then DTM Dr Devi.

A meeting cannot be successful without a team of role players and evaluation team. The team of evaluators gave positive and constructive feedback to all the speakers including table topics speakers and project speakers.

Our guest, Yee Yuan, the best Table Topics Speaker
Ing Ting, CC CL, the best evaluator

In the Toastmasters journey, you are not alone. We learn and experience together in developing our communication skills, public speaking and leadership skills.

Come and experience the joy of being a toastmaster. In University Malaya Toastmasters Club, we are a group of people who always welcome you with open arms.

Meeting No: 136

                                              Theme : If I were...I'd be...

Word of the day : Envisage

If I were a Toastmaster member who seeks for improvement from time to time, I would be volunteering myself for the Table Topic session

This applied to most participants of the Table Topic Session.

First off, it was Chan Yew Choong from D' Utama Toastmasters Club attempting the topic “ If I were blind, I would be..” His words took us to the world of empathy and gave us an account how difficult the life would be to folks who don’t have vision. Indeed, now you see, now you don’t. Simply imagine how harsh life could be at times.

Whenever the Table Topic question is revealed, it is like a much anticipated mystery being unfold. However, I doubt ACS, CL Jing Yi felt the same with the topic “ If I were a pregnant teen, I..would…”. Apparently, there was a lot of imaginary work for Jing Yi to do to hold the stage.

As for the skinny TM Kevin, he finally got to taste the life of a Big Fat Boss for 2 minutes. Imagining himself as a Big Fat Boss, he promised he would sponsor the memberships fees of UMTMC, making the speaking platform free to anyone who is keen to learn. So benevolent of him!

Anyway.. if only this was true…

Lastly, Ricky Soo, a guest, had vividly painted a miserable and piteous life with the topic “ If I were the poorest man on Earth..”.

Moving on, we had TM Nicholas as the first speaker for Project Speech. Nicholas a.k.a. Lee Chong Wei shared with us stories about his passion (badminton) and his victory over a State Player with a stunning comeback. What a remarkable feat! Good luck to your future undertaking!

Second speaker, TM Pei San nudged us with the fact that she likes to play tricks on her friends. So watch out!

Mind you, both Nicholas and Pei San were just doing their ice-breaking speech. Yet, they were composed and confident in their delivery, showing no telltale clues about that.. One of them (Nicholas) even emerged as the Best Project Speaker. Excellent!

If you are the one who bears an interest in Greek Mythology, Jonathan Lim, President of TARC Toastmasters Club, is the man. In attempting his Monodrama Speech, he took us to the scene set in the ancient Thebes and showed us how a powerful king could be transformed to a deer for not giving due respect to the Goddess of Athena.

Lastly, Jing Yi enlightened us with her workshop of how members could construct a positive club climate. Feedback from guests and members were gathered.

A short ten-minute break was complemented by palatable pizzas, with the evaluators fully charged for the Evaluation Session before calling it a day.

Yik Ming as the Toastmaster of the Evening
Kevin Chee delivering a fruitful evaluation.
Jonathan Lim, President of TARC Toastmasters Club

Beloved guests : Chan Yew Choong, Ricky Soo and                                   Khaw Jia Jian

If I were you, I would at least give myself a chance and give UMTMC a try, by attending the meeting.

If I were you, I would seize the opportunity to fulfill my personal development.

Personal development can be anything and public speaking is the most daunting species of its kind.

Come and brace yourself for the worst before stepping into the working world. Sooner or later you would find the experience extremely helpful.

Meeting No: 134

                                                Theme : Autumn
Word of the day : Relish

Autumn comes. Leaves change its colour. The will to learn doesn't waver.

As usual, the meeting room was packed with members and several guests. After a brief round of introduction, here came the Table Topic session.

Instead of being volunteered , the session saw off people like the courageous TM Nickolas and the spontaneous soon-to-be TM Yahya taking the stage by storm.

As for assignment speeches, the animal activist CC Sara enlightened us with the amazing facts about dolphins and many ways how ships and boats cruising on the sea may harm the cute creature.

Next, we had CC Wei Chin giving us a good laugh with her dramatic talk titled ‘Ignorant is not a bliss’. Lesson learnt. Remember to apply VISA beforehand when you want to visit China.

Moving on, ATMB Mustaza transformed herself into a formidable CEO, rolling out a slew of policies that encouraged commitment in Toastmasters endeavor.  However, the session proved to be a stormy one with confrontations from the heads of departments. Nevertheless, she braced the storm well and the policies were amicably accepted. Phew...

Like her hair, she definitely commands authority.

                                                  Long, long journey..

Guests must be wondering what Toastmasters can offer to them.  The Successful Club Series Speech by Jing Yi, the Area Governor came just aptly to give them a picture how a Tosatmasters journey would be like. At the same time, it served as a reminder to the members  to constantly walk out from the comfort zone.

TME Nur Syafinas.

The success of a meeting is not only made up by the fervent participation of members but also the skills of Toastmaster of the Evening (TME). It can hardly be discerned this was the first time that TM Nur Syafinas assuming the role as a TME, with the composure she showed on the stage. Good job!

Best Evaluator. CC ALB Mohammad Saifullah.

As for the evaluation session, it is never short of big names such as venerable DTM Dr. Devi and CC, ALB Mohammad Saifullah, the founder of Toastmasters in Bangladesh.( Impressive? Just google it up!) With their words and advices, improvement in oneself is just a matter of time.

General Evaluator CC Saiful Mohsin from
Pesona Toastmasters Club proffering suggestions.

Best Speakers of Assignment Speech. CC Sara and CC Wei Chin.

Guests and Friends..

Best Table Topic Speaker. CC Wei Chin.

If you deem yourself a good speaker, just come and add variety to the club. The stage always
  welcome you.

If you find yourself to be inferior one, don’t be afraid.
True. The thought of speaking in front of public is enough to make you shiver.

However, as a students-based club, University Malaya Toastmasters Club definitely provides you the room to improve your English communication skills. The environment here is not too hostile that kills one’s will to improve nor too placid that stunts one’s personal development.

It is now or never. See you!

Meeting No: 133

                                                Theme : Conscience
Word of the day : Diligence

So it was Monday Blue. However, a 2-hour session with University Malaya Toastmasters Club (UMTMC) would change the hue!

With the theme of the meeting – ‘Conscience’, it seemed that most of the club members lived up to theirs by making their appearance in the meeting. Indeed, actions speak louder than words!

CC Wei Chin on the floor!

Once you find on the itinerary that CC Wei Chin was the Toastmaster of the Evening (Emcee), the meeting will never be short of laughter. You can bet it. Her lively character coupled with the convenient ambience of the renovated meeting room made the participants to wish the time to walk a little bit slower. (Not sure about the fidgeting speaker though)

The meeting was started off with Table Topic session, with several speakers being volunteered to the stage. Despite the feeling of doom for several speakers, it turned out to be well, with each and every speaker had a host of thoughts and emotions to spill. After all, life is about sharing. Yet, sometimes, the impetus comes from being lifted off the cosy Boss-office chair.

Next, it was the exciting Project Speech Session. TM Nur Syafinas and TM Siau Inn, who will be representing the club to contest in the coming Humorous Speech Contest at Area level, seized the chance to practice their speech on the stage. With much fine-tuning work, they improved leaps and bounds in all aspects. GOOD LUCK!

After that, CC Kevin Chee, a hilarious speaker, entertained the audience by showing what you can do with your personal disadvantage, with the speech title – It’s Great to be Short. Moving on, here came the persuasive salesman with the speech title ‘A Magnificent Guide’ which was about promoting a motivational book. If not for having not enough pocket money, most students would have gone for the purchase rampage.

Dr. Devi sharing her insights and precious advices.

In Toastmasters, you can never call it a day without an evaluation session. This is where the positive and constructive feedback comes. With figures like DTM Dr. Devi, ATMB Mustazah and   ACB,CL CL Joseph Wong participating the session, one A4 paper can never be enough to accommodate the take home messages. It takes self-realization, connection and attention.

For those hiding behind the computer screen, just come and experience it. You have nothing to lose. See you!

Last meeting, we talked about decision making. What is decision making? In its simplest sense, decision making is the action of selecting among a few courses of action. However, we do not make the RIGHT decisions at sometimes. The decision we made may not bring any benefits to us. We therefore need some changes to present a better situation so that we can benefit more from the decision. Some of us used to be shy and afraid of speaking in front of public, we made the change and step forward, speak confidently in front of strangers, public. We have enhanced our speaking skills through Toastmaster Journey. This is the biggest changes we gained.
