Leadership Effectiveness Workshop

We all join Toastmasters to become better public speakers, but a lot of us forget that the Toastmasters vision has two parts – ‘improve their communication and leadership skills’ – we focus on communication and vaguely recall, or overlook leadership.

This mini-workshop is intended for Toastmasters, both new and experienced, who want to have an overview of learning aspects other than project speeches. It’s for all the Toastmasters who ever cried out:

· What’s the Competent Leader programme?
· What does it mean to be an Advanced Leader?
· How do I become a DTM?
· How can I share my skills and experiences in Toastmasters with baby Clubs?
· Why can’t I just stick to my project speeches?

Fourth Meeting - Convocation

The fourth meeting was held on the 4th August 2010. It was fourth in fourth. The theme was Convocation.

I know it's a bit late to update on the fourth meeting, the next meeting details and all other happenings in Toastmasters Division W. The blog updates are getting slower now and there were some mistakes earlier. The Area Contest has just finished yesterday and the UM TMC standings will be updated soon. Maybe it's time for the blogger of UM TMC to retire due the inefficiency. The blog needs someone who's closer to the club now.

Now let us go back to the fourth meeting. The meeting was started at exactly 5.30pm. The President gave a welcoming speech and the Toastmaster of the Evening was CC Ivy Lau. The Table Topics Master was CC Ras Hadi. Well, all of us obtained the chance to participate in the session, except for the Table Topics Evaluator - DTM Dr Devi. The topics were related to convocation.

There were two project speeches as the following:

(a) CC Project #4 - Your Body Speaks - Someone That I Look Up On - TM Sook Ching
(b) CC Project #6 - Vocal Variety - Dreams - TM Hui Xin

The General Evaluator was DTM Dr. Devi and the project speech evaluators are

(a) CC Jing Yi
(b) CC Ras Hadi

The role players were as the following:

(a) Ah Counter - CC Jing Yi
(b) Grammarian - TM Hui Xin
(c) Time Keeper - TM Rishi

Usually pictures describes better than words. So here are three pictures of the fourth meeting. Oh boy, it sure took me a long time to upload these pictures even when I reduced the quality. If you need the original pics, please don't hesitate to contact our President for the zip file format.

The AGM will be held next week. Will post more details on that soon.

That's all for me,

XOXO.

(will be retiring from the blog soon)

MAICSA Toastmasters Club Workshop

Dear All

Do you have the urge to know, how to break the ice when you have to be in a
group of strangers?

Would you like to know how to react when a stranger post you a question?
Especially, if that person is a job interviewer or someone who is in high
level position in an organisation?

Knowing the art of impromptu speaking is definitely an advantage for us.
And, in this coming MAICSA meeting (beside Midvalley), 19 August 2010,
we shall learn from our DTM Vincent Hor on this 'art'. Aside from having
our normal meeting agenda, we shall also have a 30 minutes mini workshop
on "How to speak to ANYONE at ANYTIME and ANYWHERE".

The gate fee for guest is RM10 only.

Please contact us at e-mail: umtoastmaster@gmail.com for RSVP as soon as possible.
Thank you.

Second Meeting - Achievement

We had our second meeting on 21st July 2010 with the theme 'Achievement'. Each and everyone of us must have some kind of goal to achieve, right? Well, if you don't have a goal, then maybe you should find one as soon as possible - could be a short term or long term goal. Talking about goals, it's the end of World Cup 2010.

Other than that, the word of the day was 'Goal'.
Meaning : The purpose toward which an endeavor is directed: an objective. Example : He managed to achieve his ultimate goal of conquering Mount Everest by the age of twenty. Seriously? I wonder who is he?

The meeting was started at 5.40 pm, I know, I know, we are always 'on time'. President, TM Ras Hadi, no, CC Ras Hadi, gave a welcoming speech. The Toastmaster of the Evening was CC Ras Hadi who took over from the President CC Ras Hadi and both CC Ras Hadi's are the same. CC Ras Hadi also did a speech later on. And we got to stop with CC Ras Hadi...

The Table Topics Session was conducted by CC Jing Yi and the Table Topics Evaluation was done by TM, I repeat, TM Rishi. The topics and the Table Topics Speakers were as follows:

(a) Experience is the Best Teacher - TM Kah Fai

(b) The Goal of Life - TM Ivy

(c) Football - Dr Devi

The project speeches were as the following:

(a) CC Project #4 - How to say it - Title : Money - TM Kah Fai

(b) Speeches by Management#1 - The Briefing - Title : Introducing Prime Tourism - CC Ras Hadi

Sounds complicated? I agree - from one of the toughest advance manual. TM Kah Fai stressed that money doesn't make the world go round. On the other hand, CC Ras Hadi needed some employees for his tourism business. So he got us to listen to his speech and to be employed....ya!!

The General Evaluator was DTM Dr Devi. The speech evaluators were

(a) CC Jing Yi for the first speech

(b) DTM Dr Devi for the second speech

The role players were

(a) Chee Teng - Ah Counter

(b) CC Ivy - Grammarian

(c)ACB CL Nisha - Time Keeper

As you can see below, there are new columns on reactions. You can click on it if you find this post cool, funny or interesting. Other than that, you can click somewhere else...haha...

Ok, that's all from me....

FIFA World Cup 2010 Highlights

Since there's no post for now as we are still in the semester break, which will be finishing soon, allow me to write something on the World Cup 2010.

To date, 56 matches have been completed. From 32 countries to 16 countries and now to 8 finalists. The two main surprises that hit this World Cup were the defeats of France and Italy. No one would have expected this to happen - France being the champs in 1998 and Italy in 2006. It is known that France team has some internal misunderstandings which lead to the defeat. But how Italy get into that position too? I have no idea. It can be the influence of overconfidence. Italy going off in the first round was a big loss. Both France and Italy teams came down to the last standing in their respective groups.

It can be clearly seen that most Malaysians support Brazil and England. England, being the origin of world class football, shows some difficulties in their own England team. A lot of stars in their team, but still fails to proceed to top 8. Germany, on the other hand, looks strong with their brand new players and with some experienced ones. The difference between these two teams - one likes to play as individual, the other plays as a team. That makes a lot of difference. Holland and Spain still yet to show their real skills and it was unfortunate for Portugal to meet Spain in round 16.

Now, we go to African teams. South Africa found it hard to proceed to next round due to the red card issuance to their main goalkeeper. It's a big risk of not allowing the main goalkeeper to play in any matches. Ivory Coast initially looks good when they draw with Portugal, but the main drama happens during the match with Brazil, when one of the Brazil player was awarded red card due to an Emmy Award acting by an Ivory Coast player. As you can see, it was also the desperate minute for them to enter the next round. Maybe they were 'too' desperate. Ghana, on the other hand, is still having lucks since they don't have to play with the 'giants' yet. Cameroon was confirmed eliminated when they lost in the second game during the group match. A few years ago, Cameroon was one of the well played African football team in the World Cups, except in the year 1994 where they were defeated 6-0 by Russia.

Asian was not bad in this World Cup with a lot of improvements, especially Japan. South Korea and Japan managed to enter the top 16. Japan was the final Asian country to be eliminated from World Cup. I would say that Japan did play well indeed. Losing with penalty kicks with Paraguay was an unlucky defeat. I could see the tears flowing profusely from the players, fans and their coach. They really want to win the game. But their future will be different. Some of Japanese and South Korean players might have the chance to play for some prestigious clubs soon. This will indirectly change the standards of football in their country. Who knows, they could be the top 8 in the next World Cup!!

South American teams? I have nothing to say, they are just too good. Good luck for Europe vs South American matches - Brazil vs. Holland and Argentina vs. Germany. As the octopus says, Germany may win the match. :)

That's all from me...

XOXO.

This will be the report on the final meeting of the semester 2, Session 2009/2010. The meeting was held on 31st March 2010. The theme was 'Sports' and the Word of the Day was 'Play'. Example : She plays badminton every Saturday. I wonder who plays badminton on Saturdays. Is it you, Arissa?

TM Fun Mun Wah started out the meeting with the welcoming speech. Then, it was the invocation session by DTM Dr Devi Menon. It was about determination that was written by a Law Faculty student of UM. It was inspiring too.

The Toastmaster of the Evening was TM Arissa for the first time. A bit of struggle in the initial, but later on, she has managed to run the meeting very well. The Table Topics Master was TM Fun, with topics related to sports. The Table Topics Speakers were as follows:

1) Hadi
2) Yu He
3) Arissa

Yes, all of us had the chance to participate in the session. The Table Topics Evalutor was DTM Dr Devi. Next was the Project Speeches Session. The Project Speakers were as follows:

1) TM Yu He - CC Project#7 - Dream
2) TM Arissa - CC Project#9 - Martial Arts

I think you can learn various types of martial arts with the demonstrations if you come to our meetings. Muay Thai, Taekwondo, Karate,.....So, it's 2 in 1 - public speaking + martial arts.

The General Evaluator was DTM Dr Devi. The Project Speech Evaluator was TM Fun. The role players were as follows:

1) Ah Counter - TM Yu He
2) Grammarian - TM Hadi
3) Time Keeper - TM Rishi

Last but not least, it was the closing ceremony of the meetings for the whole semester. Our club advisor, DTM Dr Devi gave a short speech highlighting that the club is doing perfect with the involvement of dedicated members. TM Fun Mun Wah, our Vice President of Membership gave the closing presidential speech of the semester with the summary explaining about the club's performance in the semester and it's path towards the new semester.

With the closing speech, the final meeting of the semester was officially adjourned.

Following the previous years, some of our members would be graduating soon because this semester would be their final. So all those who are graduating soon, a new life will be waiting out there - the working life. Do come to our meeting in the next semester if you have the time to make it and you want to get back the sweet moments of the university life. The club will always be here to welcome you.

See you in the next semester!!!

Eighth Meeting - Healthy Living

The meeting was held on 24th March 2010. I know it's a bit late to write a report on the meeting, but XOXO has been quite busy for the past few days. It's 6.00 in the morning now and XOXO woke up just to complete this report, as the responsibility to the club. I can already see tears appearing from the eyes who are reading this now.

Just kidding around....ahaha...let's go back to our 'business'.

The theme of the meeting was 'Healthy Living' and the word of the day was - Healthy. Meaning : A state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being. Example: Everybody needs a good diet to be healthy.

TM Ras Hadi gave a welcoming speech as the VPE and TM Fun was the Toastmaster of the Evening. For the first time, the Table Topics Master was CC Heng Jing Yi...*I could hear claps*. Hold on...suddenly I feel that it was her third time. Well, I have no idea.

The Table Topics Speakers were:

1) Ivy Lau
2) Ng Lay Choo
3) Khairul Nizam
4) Fun Mun Wah
5) Rishi

Guess who won the session? Yes, it was Fun....our very own member who will be competing on the Division W contest, the Champion of Table Topics Area W5. * I could hear claps...again...*

I hope your are ok with the informal writing of this report...

And not forgetting Miss Christine Khoo and Miss Christine Ong.

I will be sending in the report on the final meeting of the semester soon. So keep an eye on the blog.

Fifth Meeting - Valentine

Since it has been quite some time (more than a week) after the meeting has been held, I need to admit that I have forgotten on certain things. So, shall I make the report a little short?

Certainly not!!! Why should I do that when the theme of the day is Valentine. The word of the day is 'love' - Emotions related to a sense of strong affection and attachment. The meeting started at exactly 5.30 pm with our SAA, TM Sui Peng calling the meeting to order. Did the President came to the meeting? Let me think for a while...Yes!! She came and she gave the presidential welcoming speech.

The Toastmaster of the Evening was TM Khairulnizam, for the first time. Yes, a little bit struggle here and there and there you go - a smooth flow soon. The Table Topics Master, ACB CL, Deborah Chow, gave questions related to the theme. The Table Topics participants are :

(a) Rishi

(b) Heng Jing Yi

(c) Levine

(d) Sui Peng

Before I go on, I better introduce to you to of our guests who came to the meeting that day - ACB CL Ng Lay Choo (Sai Toastmasters Club) and CC CL Levine (MII Toastmasters Club).

Next were the project speeches. The speakers were as the following :

(a) TM Arissa - CC Project#3 - Brain Differences

(b) TM Khairulnizam - CC Project#7 - Muay Thai

(c) TM Ras Hadi - CC Project#8 - Migration

(d) TM Jing YI - CC Project#8 - sorry forgotten your title, but something about recycle bins.

and a superb speech by our guest

(e) ACB CL Ng Lay Choo - Advanced Speech#3 - Habits of Highly Effective People.

Arissa talked about the difference in men's and women's thinking and I really enjoyed it for a reason - she praises men...haha...Khairulnizam showed a new defense tool called Muay Thai. Ras Hadi talked about migration of people and I think Jing Yi should have brought the recycle bins to show it to us. I know it's heavy.

The evaluators were as follows:

(a) TM Ras Hadi - first time

(b) TM Rishi as usual

(c) ACB CL Deborah

(d) DTM Dr Devi

(e) CC CL Levine

The General Evaluator was ACB CL Ng Lay Choo and the role players were:

(a) TM Hadi - Ah Counter

(b) TM Fun - Grammarian

(c) TM Sagacious - Time Keeper

There is one important thing that I need to mention. Someone has got her Competent Communicator - guess who?

HENG JING YI

Congrats, Jing Yi!!!!

That's all from me,

XOXO.

First Meeting - 13th January 2010

It was our first meeting of the semester and we had it in the open space of Dataran Sastera. The attendance of members was very encouraging and the meeting worked out well.

We didn't expect anyone would come, clap and cheer for the speakers in the open space where other students would be wondering what we were doing in the public. At least we made them thinking that this is a club of public speaking.

The Project Speech Speakers were:
1) TM Khairul Nizam - CC Project #2 - World Cup
2) TM Hui Xin - CC Project #5 - OBS Experience
3) TM Ras Hadi - CC Project #6 - The Quarrel of the Cat and Dog
4) TM Yu He - CC Project # (missed out that one) - The Dating Game

From football to camping, to wolves and finally, Earth.

The Speech Evaluators were:
1) TM Fun Mun Wah
2) ACS CL Deborah Chow and
3) XXX Rishi (you may not want to know the XXX)

Not forgetting our Toastmaster of the Evening, TM Heng Jing Yi.

Perhaps we should have meetings at all the 'dataran' in UM. It can be our UM TMC road show and real public speaking event where the speakers have no choice but to speak in front of the members and public. That could be fun.
