Ninth Meeting - Music

It’s our ninth meeting of the semester 1, 2008 / 2009 on 24th September 2008. The theme of the day was ‘Music’. The word of the day was ‘Harmonious’ – meaning: having a pleasant tune or harmony controlled. Example of sentence: The harmonious classical music has inspired people from one generation to the next generation. This meeting was a special meeting as there was a memorable event that happened later on.

Our Sergeant-of –Arms, TM Grace Kang called for meeting to order at 4.53pm. Our Toastmaster of the Evening was TM Deborah Chow. She introduced the theme and the role players before handing over the floor to the Table Topics Master – TM Teo Bee Guan. For the first time in the Table Topic Session, we actually had the music being played and it was a very innovative idea of Bee Guan. To choose the Table Topics Speakers, a hat was passed as the music was being played. The person who was holding the hat when the music stopped was the Table Topics Speaker. We had four Table Topics Speakers who participated from the members and guests (and yes, they were the lucky ones). The Table Topics Evaluator, CC Khoo Suat Hong, then evaluated on the way of improvement for all our Table Topics Speakers.

Next, it was time for the main agenda – the Project Speeches, as the following:
1. CC Project #3 – “Beware – It’s Live” – by TM Rishi Ganesh
2. CC Project #4 – “A dedication” – by TM Grace Kang
3. CC Project #10 – “Suicide is an Escape” – by TM Kimmy Foo

TM Rishi explained about the interview session while TM Grace Kang and TM Kimmy inspired us on their life experiences. Do you still remember about the memorable event that I wrote at the beginning of this report? Yes, it was the finishing speech of the Competent Communicator Manual for TM Kimmy Foo (or I would say, CC Kimmy Foo). The next two paragraphs of this report is a special dedication to CC Kimmy.

TM KIMMY is now CC KIMMY

Kimmy is our beloved President of UM Toastmasters Club and she is the first member to receive the Competent Communicator (CC) in our club for this new term. She was on a fast track and completed her remaining seven speeches in just 3 months. We, all of the members of UM TMC, are very proud of her. Keep on leading the way, Kimmy.

Kimmy inspired us all on the topic of suicide. Yes, you are right, Kimmy. Suicide is NOT the best solution for any problems, (even if we feel depressed up to the maximum, we must not take this decision). There are always the loved ones and friends who are willing to share the burden with us. Let’s take it as a challenge of life. Say ‘NO’ to suicide.

Thus, any member who wants two paragraphs in the report dedicated just for them, please finish up your Competent Communicator Manual as fast as possible. Dear President, is it alright if 4 paragraphs dedicated for me when I got the CC later on?

Then, our General Evaluator of the evening, CTM CL Dr. Sharon (from Womens Institute of Management TMC) took over the meeting. Our speech evaluators were CC Khoo Suat Hong (The Malaysian Institue of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators TMC), our very own, TM Deborah (from UM TMC) and ACS CL Renganathan (Ernst & Young TMC). Our roles players were TM Fun, TM Ras Hadi, and TM Pang. Dear Stephanie, we would not miss you out. Thank you all for the support.

Not to forget our honorable guests Prof. Madya Dr. Umaiyah Hj Umar, Puan Rosenun Che Sof and Miss Maria Cristiana (our UM lecturers) who have made their effort to attend our meeting. We were really happy to have our lecturers in the meeting. Thank you.

Finally it was the award giving session…..The Best Table Topics Speaker goes to….drum roll…..drum roll…..

MARIUM

Congrats Marium!!! Hope you have enjoyed the meeting together with all of us.

With regards,
Rishi

Eighth Meeting - Acronym

The eighth meeting was held on 17th Sept 2008. I will be making some changes in this report to make it the theme report - Acronym, unlike other meeting reports.

The meeting was started at 4.48 pm and our gorgeous President, TM KF, gave a welcoming speech and continued to play the role of TME. The theme of the day Acronyms....hmmm.....there will be a lot of acronyms in this report - so be prepared not to confuse yourself.

Next was the TTS by TM FMW. There were altogether five speakers of the TTS - ACS CL MM, TM HS,TM GRT, CC KS,TM P. The questions were quite challenging and some were complicated. I still couldn't figure out some of the questions till now. Good move TM FMW, you really made the TTS speakers to think at a high range. The TTE was done by CC KSH from MAICSA TMC. Thank you CC KSH.

The project speeches were as the following:

1. Ice Breaking - titled "AVOFT" - by TM FMW
2. Ice Breaking - titled "About Me" - by TM NJ
3. Inspire Your audience - titled "Courage to Conquer" by TM DCYK

Congrats to TM FMW and TM NJ for presenting their first speech confidently. It's the first move to the world of Toastmasters. For TM DCYK, well done on your approx 10 minutes speech. This speech has showed us your true credibility that you are prepared to represent our area for the upcoming contest.

Feel confused with the acronyms? Hold on....Still more to go.....

Thank you to our speech evaluators ACB CL CO (from Mid Valley TMC), ACS CL MM, and CC KS (from DKC TMC). We are pleased to have you in the meeting. Not to forget, our GE of the evening - CC JG (from UNITAR TMC).

The other role players were TM TC as AC, TM RH as G, and TM RG as TK.

Finally, it was the TTBS.......drum roll......drum roll........Dear President, can we get a drum for real as it would be rambunctious for our upcoming meetings?.......oh, forgotten.......drum roll...drum roll.....

Meyyappa

Congrats Meyyappa!!!! You were our TTBS for the meeting. Now let us expand all the acronyms.

TM KF - Kimmy Foo
TME - Toastmaster of the Evening

TM FMW - Fun Mun Wah
ACS CL MM - Meyyappa Manickam
TM HS - Hui Shan
TM GRT - Grace Rebekah Teh
CC KS - K Shan

CC KSH - Khoo Suat Hong
TM NJ - Nyuk Jet
TM DCYK - Deborah Chow Yik Kuen
ACB CL CO - Christine Ong

TM TC - Terrence Chong
TM RH - Ras Hadi
TM RG - Guess who?
AC - Ah Counter
G - Grammarian

DKC - Deloitte KassimChan

UM TMC at the TELEKOM TMC Contest

We have been at the Mid Valley, HELP, Deloitte, SJMC and MII Toastmasters (Club and Area) Contests. The list goes on as we were at the TELEKOM Toastmasters Club for their Humorous Speech & Evaluation Contest last Friday.

TM Grace Kang was the test speaker, while TM Kimmy and TM Rishi were two of the judges in the contest. It was actually the first experience for TM Kimmy and TM Rishi to be the judge in a contest.

TM Grace Kang presented her speech title 'Small Steps' for the second time as test speaker in order to improve the areas that have been commented by contest evaluators of SJMC previously.

This time, Grace looked more confident in delivering her speech. There was no tense or nervousness in her eyes. Moreover, she did not refer to any papers or notes during the presentation. Obviously, she had prepared well for a better performance. Good job, Grace!!! You have shown a quick and tremendous improvement in just a short period of time. Keep it up.

Meanwhile, for Kimmy and Rishi, being a judge for the first time has taught some points and methods of evaluating contestants. It also taught them the characteristics of a contestant that the judges will look for in a contest. It was a great experience for all of us in the TELEKOM TMC HS & EC.

Seventh Meeting - Lantern Festival

It was 10th September 2008 and we had our seventh meeting of the semester. The theme was Lantern Festival. Lantern festival is a Chinese festival that falls on the 15th day of the first month in the Lunar year. There will be a lot of moon cakes served during the festival, so don't miss out any of it.

The word of the day was 'Auspicious' - meaning: a positive and successful future. For example, "They won their first match of the season 5-1 which was an auspicious beginning".

The meeting was started at 4.50 pm with President's welcoming speech. Our Toastmaster of the Evening was TM Bee Guan with a brief introduction on the origin of Lantern Festival.

TM Rishi was the Table Topics Master of the evening. There were six table topics speakers in the session and all of them did a great job. Some of the questions were - 'Do you like mooncakes and why?', 'What will be the difference between a chocolate cake and a mooncake?', and 'How do you celebrate the lantern festival?'. There was also an imaginative bonus question - 'What do you think will happen if the Earth doesn't have a moon?'. Now that could be a tough one. But could you see a similarity if compared to previous table topics sessions? Yes, we can't stop mentioning about the food. The past - ABC & ice cream, the present - chocolate cake & mooncake. I would say it was a co-incidence. The Table Topics Evaluator was DTM Vincent Hor with evaluations on areas to be improved by the table topics speakers.

Next were the project speeches as the following:

1) CC Project 2 - "Speak Out Your Mind" by TM Pang
2) CC Project 8 - " My Journey to Macau" by TM Sze Wan
3) CC Project 8 - "The Indic Branch" by TM Kimmy Foo

Actually we learned a lot from the three speeches, how to speak out of our mind, the condition of the 'take-off terminal', and to count from 1 to 10 in Tamil. Well done project speakers. Dear President, just a thought, can we have FREE night classes to learn more about the Indian languages from you?

Thank you to our General Evaluator - Mr Renganathan from Ernst & Young TMC, our Speech Evaluators - DTM Vincent Hor from MAICSA TMC, ACB Kian Yoong from Deloitte KassimChan TMC and TM Kimmy Foo from our own UM TMC.

We also had our alumni with us in the meeting - Lee Fooi, Min En, and Sze Wan. We were glad to meet up our senior members of UM TMC. Looking forward to see you all in the upcoming meetings. Not to forget to bring together other alumni members.

Well done Terrence for becoming our time keeper. It would be the first experience for you of taking up the role player in Toastmasters.

Finally, it was the Best Table Topics Award......drum roll...drum roll....(eventhough we do not have drums)....

STEPHANIE

Congrats, Stephanie!!! You are a great speaker. Thank you for giving us the support by introducing our club to the UM students. We would really like to see you presenting your speeches soon.

Signing off,

Fancy giving a speech in a hospital?

UM Toastmasters were at Subang Jaya Medical Centre Toastmasters Club (SJMC Tmc) to help out at their club's contest.

TM Grace Kang was their test speaker while I was the time keeper and TM Rishi was there to observe.

SJMC Tmc had good member strength and added with the good turnout of toastmasters from other clubs, there was a good turnout at the contest.

Before delivering her speech, Grace was extremely tensed. She practised what seemed like a million times before it was time for her speech delivery.

"...our test speaker for today..TM Grace Kang with her speech title Small Steps!"

She wow-ed the audience and gave the contestants a good run for their money. Although she was so tense and nervous before the delivery, I thought she did a wonderful job indeed!

Kudos to Grace whom was brave enough to step out of the comfort zone of UM Tmc to complete her speech in SJMC Tmc! Keep it up and all the best in your future speeches!

Cheers,

TM Kimmy Foo
President

Dennis was the Champion for both the contests while Kian Yoong was the First Runner Up for both the contests. Congratulations!

Sixth Meeting

Our 6th meeting was held on 3th September 2008 with the theme of the day – none. You might be wondering whether the theme is none or there’s no theme at all. Well, actually there was no theme at all as we have to finish up the meeting quite early in order to attend the Humorous Speech and Evaluation Contest of Area W5. You can read the achievement that UM TMC has made in the contest just below this post.

The word of the day was ‘Euphoria’. It means state of extreme happiness. We were quite euphoria to use the word ‘euphoria’ for several times in the meeting, especially TM Fun Mun Wah. Our meeting started at 4.30pm and the Toastmaster of the Evening was TM Grace Kang. The table topic session was conducted by TM Teo Bee Guan with brief explanation and questions regarding copyright and home or school education.

Our Table Topics Evaluator was TM Kimmy Foo. She indeed gave a very encouraging evaluation to all our table topic speakers. Well done Kimmy, you inspire us. In this meeting, we had only managed to have one speech project due to the rush. Our project speaker was TM Deborah Chow and she gave a practice on her contest speech. She made us all laugh aloud till we were in the position of euphoria.

Thank you to our General Evaluator, ATMB Christine Ong, and our speech evaluator, ACB Simon Tan to show us the way of improvement for a better speech, evaluation and overall meeting. The Ah counter in this meeting was very excited. He sometimes was in a position where he was too interested in the speech until he has forgotten to count the pause fillers. Luckily the Grammarian came into rescue.

Finally, it was the award giving time for the best table topic speaker....drum roll time………drum roll…..drum roll…..

TERRENCE
Congrats, Terrence!!! We are looking forward to your next participation in the table topics session.
As soon as the meeting was adjourned, we rushed to our Area W5 contest. You can read on the report published at the below of this post.
