Fifteenth Meeting - Chinese New Year
It was our fifteenth meeting with the theme “Chinese New Year”. We have started the meeting at about 5.30 pm and you could see all the decorations were in red, including the red carnation flowers tied to the chairs. Now, that was something ‘sweet’. There was the ‘angpau’ pasted all over the meeting room, but sadly - without the money inside. We also had members and guests wearing red (except for some wearing all black…but it was okay as long as you look good).
The word of the day was “Gregarious”, meaning: seeking and enjoying the company of others of the same kind. Example of the word usage: Alex tends to be gregarious whenever he participates in the activities held by the Chelsea Fan Club.
The Sergeant-at Arms called the meeting to order and our President gave some welcoming speech for the meeting. Then, she requested all the members and guests to introduce themselves and to explain the activities they may have planned for the upcoming Chinese New Year. Later, Toastmaster of the Evening, TM Rishi took over the floor and explained briefly about the Toastmasters organization and Chinese New Year celebration.
After that, it was the Table Topics Session by TM Nyuk Jet. The questions were related to Chinese New Year theme. All the members and guests who participated in the session received some gifts prepared by Nyuk Jet. Good going, Table Topics Master. I and the Grammarian were so thirsty as soon as we saw Nyuk Jet taking out the Sarsi can drink from a bag. Hmmm….The Table Topics Speakers were as the following:
1. Guan
2. Vighnes
3. Mahathir
4. Kimmy
5. Kai Xin
6. Syu Yu
Next was the evaluation session by our Table Topics Evaluator, Dr Devi (our very own lecturer from the Linguistic Faculty, UM, and an experienced Toastmaster member). Dr Devi’s evaluation made us to think the new ways to improve ourselves as a better table topics speaker.

TM Khairil shared his story of how he ended up in Accounting course. Ice Breaker is all about sharing, and we had a great session of sharing experiences and feelings (from the speakers). We gave three standing ovation for all the speakers as to congratulate and encourage them for taking the first step in public speaking by Toastmasters way.
The General Evaluator, Dr Devi, took control of the session for an overall evaluation of the meeting. Our Speech Evaluators were CC Kimmy and TM Deborah. Fourteenth Meeting - Reunion
It was our fourteenth meeting on 14th January 2009 with the theme “Reunion”. The theme was related to us, students, as we were reunited again after the semester break. The word of the day was “Yoke”, meaning : to closely connect two ideas, people or things. Example of the word usage: As we were yoked together for decades, I didn’t feel threatened by him.
TheToastmaster of the Evening (TME) was our President, CC Kimmy Foo. She explained to us about brief history of Toastmasters and the manuals. She also emphasized on our officers and members mission to achieve the President Distinguished Club for the session 2008/2009. We are working for it and we will definitely try our best to achieve it. After TME completed the introduction session, the floor was taken over by our Table Topics Master, TM Teo Bee Guan.
TM Teo Bee Guan came completely prepared with the world map consisting of main continents. The participants would have to choose a continent in order to receive the question. Our Table Topics Speakers were
Bee Guan really made us to think deeply on some aspects as the questions were quite challenging. The Table Topics Evaluation was done by DTM Soh Fong Wai from the D’Utama Toastmasters Club. We learned some new things on doing impromptu speech, especially the past, present and future method.
Then, it was the Project Speech session. The first speaker was TM Grace Rebekah, CC Project No.3: Force of Attraction. Well, it was really an exciting topic, nothing to do with science or physics, as we would be expecting at first. The force of attraction that Grace was actually mentioning was between opposite genders – the ideal characters of a person that the opposite gender would be looking for. Higher grading was given for boys who have deep voices and girls with high pitches.
Next, was speech by TM Nyuk Jet, CC Project No.6: Comment on Coffee. Nyuk Jet demonstrated on how people would react if the coffee is not good or bitter. Different people would have different way of reaction towards coffee, some may like it, some don’t, some would appraise the coffee maker, and some would just throw the cup of coffee.
As the third speaker, TM Rishi Ganesh gave the speech on CC Project No.6: The Story of an Invitation. He did a storytelling about three female characters – two girls and an aunt, who showed their generosity, sacrifice, and friendship.
The General Evaluator, DTM Soh Fong Wai, took control of the session for an overall evaluation of the meeting. Our speech evaluators were TM Teo Bee Guan from our own UM TMC, CC Tej Tze Chien from Midvalley Toastmasters Club and DTM Lee Swee Seng from the MIM KL Toastmasters Club. Our role players were TM Khairil (Ah Counter), TM Grace Rebekah (Grammarian), and TM Ras Hadi (Time Keeper).
Thank you to all evaluators and role players.
Next was the time for awards. It would be a different and improved award giving session from this meeting onwards because we will be giving out prizes for Best Table Topics Speaker, Best Project Speech Speaker, and Best Speech Evaluator. That’s shows a better chance and higher probability of winning awards for the members and guests.
The Best Table Topics Speaker goes to…..drum roll….drum roll…..

Thirteenth Meeting - A New Beginning
New year begets new beginnings, hence for the first meeting of the new semester, University Malaya Toastmasters Club decided to go with the theme "A New Beginning". Going hand in hand with the theme was the word of the day, "Fresh".
The meeting started with Sergeant at Arms, TM Grace reminding us of the ground rules before handing the time over to President, CC Kimmy Foo. Mdm President took over the invocation session with her speech and told us about how we should "Start With An End In Mind". And with this, she mentioned that all the officers are working towards strengthening the club internally by reaching out to the students of University Malaya and thus, reaching President Distinguished Club status by the end of her term.
The TME of the meeting, TM Grace Teh took over as the TME of the day. She explained briefly about the history of Toastmasters Club and how it has benefitted many around the world.
Then, the Table Topic Master, TM Fun Mun Wah took centre stage and invited everyone to volunteer for interesting table topics pertaining to the theme of the meeting. The table topic speakers are:
1. Nyuk Jet
2. Selina
3. Terrence (btw, when are you going to start on your ice-breakers speech? *ahem*)
4. Qin Mei
5. KN (btw, when are you going to start on your ice-breakers speech? *ahem*)
Dr Devi Menon, Area Governor of Area W3 and also a lecturer in University Malaya was the Table Topics Evaluator and she gave a thorough evaluation on all our impromptu speakers of the day.
Then, the session was continued with the project speeches and the first one was none other than TM Pang! TM Pang, an alumni of UM, gave a speech on smoking (The Disadvantages of Smoking) which was refreshing indeed to listen to.
Our VPE, TM Teo Bee Guan, did his 8th Project Speech with the simple title: Dimension. Everyone thought he was to give a public lecture on this deep subject but instead his speech left us leaving home thinking about what he said. "Enemies or no enemies, they have family too and who are we to decide..."
Madam President then took over to give her speech from the Advanced Communicator's Manual (Storytelling) entitled, A Rose Without Its Leaves. She told us about Justin, a dyslexic boy whom she taught. The end of her speech left the entire room with pin drop silence...
General Evaluator, CC CL Lee Sook Peng took control and together with her team, gave a feedback which were indeed scrumptious breakfast for the champions of UM Tmc. Her team were:
Speech Evaluator 1: DTM Vincent Hor
Speech Evaluator 2: ACB Christine Ong
Speech Evaluator 3: CC CL Leong Oi Wah
Ah Counter: TM Ras Hadi
Grammarian: TM Grace Kang
Time Keeper: TM Nyuk Jet
Thank you dear evaluators and role players!
Then, it was time for awards and the BEST TABLE TOPICS SPEAKER IS... *drum rolls*...
Congratulations Selina! Congrats too for winning this award when it is just your first time here!
It was a wonderful start to "A New Beginning" and we at UM Tmc would like to thank everyone, guests, members and newcomers alike for attending and gracing our first meeting.
