For the month of April, we will be having only two meetings - 1st and 8th April 2009. This is because we have to give way for the revision week and, of course, the final examination week. However, the officers of UM TMC have planned to have another two meetings in the month of May (during the semester break) to increase the project speeches completion by our members who will still be around the Klang Valley area. It could also be a meeting with speech marathon session. Please surf our blog for an updated information on this later on.
The 6-months official membership due is scheduled to be on 31st March 2009, in accordance to Toastmasters International. E-mails have been sent to all members regarding the membership renewal. If you didn't receive any e-mails regarding membership renewal or if you have enquiries, please do not hesitate to contact us at umtoastmaster@gmail.com. We will try to reach you as soon as possible.
49th meeting since the day UM TMC was born was themed numbers for we decided that numbers dictate our lives one way or the other and giving tribute to it was one way of realising how important it is.
The word of the day: Nominal (adj). A nominal value does not show what something is really worth or really costs because it does not take into account changes in the price of other goods and services (not real) .
The meeting started slightly later than usual due to the rain. However, we all had a fun time watching the videos which Daddy Vincent brought for us. We had the opportunity to watch Jim Key and other distinguished speakers from around the world just before the start of the meeting. Thank you Vincent.
CC Deborah then took over as the TME and started off in a cute manner where she asked everyone to say a number and the story behind the number. It was a fun introductory session and it opened the doors for us to know each other better.
The table topics session was handled by TM Nyuk Jet who turbo-ed herself to the club meeting in the rain to conduct the table topics session. Thanks Turbo Jet! We had 6 speakers who are:
Hadi
Wynlyn
Deborah
Grace
Yu He
Kuang Shan
DTM Vincent then took over the TT Evaluation as he evaluated and gave recommendations to all our TT Speakers.
There were 4 Project Speakers and they were:
CC #1 - Me by TM Wynlyn
CC #1 - About Me by TM Liyana Kamisan
CC #1 - Forever Love by TM Teng Yu He
CC #2 - Is Virginity Very Important Before Marriage - TM Gui Siew Peng
Congratulations to all the project speakers! Congratulations to the first timers who finally did their Ice Breakers. It was fun to listen and know more about all of you. For the information of those who were not present, we have 2 head prefects among the 4 project speakers and someone braved the odds to speak on a Toastmasters Taboo Topic. What a pity to those who couldnt make it. It was indeed a fun meeting.
Our General Evaluator was none other than CC Hoo Kuang Shan (have fun in Japan!) from DeloitteKassim Chan TMC. Project Evaluators were CC, CL Jess Foong of Unitar (thank you for coming all the way), TM Grace Kang (first time evaluator!) and CC Kimmy Foo.
Thank Role Players: Grammarian = TM Grace Kang, Ah Counter = TM Kung Shyh Yu, Time Keeper = CC Kimmy Foo
So, during the awards session,
The Best Table Topics Speaker goes to... *drumroll*
CC HOO KUANG SHAN
There were no Best Project Speaker this week due to some technical glitches. We apologise.
Next meeting's details:
Date : 1st April 2009! Time : 5.15pm Venue: BSEC 001, Block C, Education Faculty, University Malaya
The theme : APRIL FOOL'S DAY!
We are slowly reaching the end of the semester. End of sem, pressure mounts. As what Ralph C. Smedley says, "We Learn Best in Moments of Enjoyment". Hence, we decided to make light of the current pressure-cooker days and have an April Fool's theme.
Special invitation to TM Joy Lee, Treasurer, UM TMC 2007/2008!
Come prepared with Jokes. Not Pranks.
CC Kit Leng, President, University of Malaya TMC, 2008/2009.
To show our support to Earth Hour Challenge, let's join the world to switch off the lights and any electrical equipments this Saturday, 28 March 2009, starting from 8.30pm to 9.30pm. In saving the environment point of view, we have to admit that one hour does not make much difference in Malaysia, as the generators will still be on the run for the required power demand.
However, supporting the Earth Hour Challenge will show that Malaysians also care for the environment and we will do all the necessary things in order to save the Earth before it's too late.
It was our 48th meeting (since UM TMC was born) and 21st meeting of the session 2008/2009 on 18th March 2009. The theme of the day was TV Programme. The word of the day was “Censorship”, which was closely related to the theme. Meaning: Official supervision. Example of sentence – If I were a lawgiver, I would exercise a censorship over the poets. Some parts of TV programmes need to be censored in order to influence the audience with unhealthy characters.
The meeting started on time. Let me highlight the sentence in bold. The Sergeant-of-Arms called the meeting to order and hand it over to the President, CC Kimmy Foo. After the introduction session, the first-time Toastmaster of the Evening, TM Ras Hadi, took control by explaining briefly on local made television programmes. He also explained about the history of Toastmasters International, where some TME do forget that, especially me!!
Next was the Table Topics Session by CC Kimmy Foo. Well, what can I say, she has taken some initiatives to actually design the table topics questions in Power Point format with the television set background. Great job!! There were 8 questions altogether, but we had the time for only 6 Table Topics Speakers. Our timekeeper, TM Grace Kang, said – “No, no time for anymore speakers” – after the 6th speaker. The Table Topics Speakers were as the following:
1. Grace Rebekah
2. Rishi
3. Lee Yan
4. Vijay
5. Zheng Ming
6. Hadi (our new member who's been attending all the meetings lately. Thanks Hadi for the support).
Next was the Table Topics Evaluation by TM Teo Bee Guan. Evaluating 6 speakers at a time is not an easy task as you really need to use your listening and thinking skills. I can feel it even though I have not been a Table Topics Evaluator. All the speakers did well including the first timers and the third timer.
After that, was the moment of Project Speeches. UM TMC has made a history again in today’s meeting. We have 5 Project Speech Speakers (including the trial speech for the Division W Contest by the champion of Area W5 winner). The Project Speech Speakers were as the following:
1. CC Project # 1- Ice Breaker - 'Myself' by TM Hui Xin 2. CC Project # 1- Ice Breaker - 'A Person From My Past' by TM Clarence 3. CC Project # 1- Ice Breaker - 'Before, Current and After' by TM Roanne 4. CC Project # 1- Ice Breaker - 'About Me' by TM Ong Kah Hoe 5. Trial Speech for Division W Contest by CC Teh Tze Chien
It seems to be that we are getting to know closely a lot of our new members by their ice-breaker speeches - their interests, characters, hobbies, school life, sports, activities, and memorable events (eg. TM Hui Xin's incident - I'm sure you couldn't forget that at all, Hui Xin). We appreciate that all of you (Ice Breaker Speakers) took the hassle to share it with all of our us. About the trial speech, we gave some comments of improvement to CC Tze Chien after the meeting so that he will succeed in the division contest by representing our Area W5. Good luck Tze Chien, our support is for you.
Our General Evaluator was Dr Devi Menon, our very own UM lecturer from the Linguistic Faculty, and the advisor of UM TMC. Our Project Speech Evaluator were CC Kimmy, ATMB Christine Ong (from Midvalley TMC), Dr Devi Menon, and TM Rishi. So, we had 4 different evaluators evaluating speeches from all angles, and it’s for the best of the Project Speakers.
Thank you to all the role players – TM Lee Yee Sin (Ah Counter), TM Rishi (Grammarian), and TM Grace Kang (Time Keeper). Wow, TM Rishi’s name was all over the place in this meeting..hehe..
Next was the awards session
The Best Table Topics Speaker goes to…drum roll….drum roll…
LEE YAN
The Best Project Speech Speaker goes to….drum roll….drum roll…
HUI XIN
Congrats, girls…
Dear President, I’ve heard that of all the TV programmes you have watched, you like news the most, is it true?
Our next meeting details are as the following:
Date : 25th March 2009 (thanks Zeuf!)
Time : 5.15pm
Venue : BSEC101, First Floor, Block C, Education Faculty, University Malaya.
The theme is “NUMBERS”. We will be giving appreciation to all the numbers that have influenced our lives from the day we were born till now. So make sure you attend the meeting to give your support to the numbers.
Glad to say that we are also in the Facebook. You are welcomed to join our Facebook group to post at the wall, suggestions, forums, and to keep us connected. It's another way of our communcation. You can find our group named as
Date : 18th March 2009 (Wednesday) Time : 5.15 pm Venue : BSEC 101 (formely known as BTEC 001), First Floor, Block C, Education Faculty, UM. (same place as before)
Our theme would be "TV Programmes". Thus, maybe you can think of a TV programme that you like the most to share with us, even if it's just a cartoon.
It was our twentieth meeting on 11th March 2009. We started the meeting early, at around 4.00 pm, as the Area W5 Contest was scheduled on the same day at 7.00 pm. Thus, we also have to cut short our meeting.
No Table Topics Session this time, just the Project Speeches only. Our theme of the day was Women’s Day, as it has been officially celebrated on 8th March 2009. Since there is no table topics session, our TME played her role to lift up the theme during the introduction.
Since the meeting was a short one, I would like to make this report a short one too, in accordance to the meeting. So, here it goes:
SAA : TM Grace Kang TME : TM Grace Rebekah
Project Speeches:
1. CC Project # 1 – ‘Two Principles in my Life’ by TM Sook Ching 2. CC Project # 1 – ‘Sky’ by TM Cassandra 3. CC Project # 1 – ‘Myself’ by TM Wan Xin 4. CC Project # 3 – ‘Misunderstanding’ by TM Ras Hadi
The Area W5 International Speech & Table Topics Contest 2009 was over about 2 hours ago. Sad to say that we didn't make it to the Division W Contest for both ISC or TTC. It was not the lose of Kimmy or Kung Syh Yu, but it was the lose of UM TMC. When any of our members fall, we fall together, and when any of our members rise, we rise together.
Failure is sometimes essential to alert us on our weaknesses and the actions that need to be taken to correct it. We need failures in order to achieve higher. It's okay if we loose, but we have to learn from it. With all the failures, one day, we will send a UM TMC member to compete up to the district level. We must make this a reality.
To Kimmy and Kung Syh Yu, we know that both of you did your best in the contest, maybe lagging in some aspects. We, UM TMC, are really proud of you.
Date : 11th March 2009 (Wednesday) Time : 4.00 pm Venue : BSEC 101 (formely known as BTEC 001), First Floor, Block C, Education Faculty, UM. (same place as before)
Our theme would be "Women's Day". Please take note that there is change in time. We have to start the meeting early to give way for our Area W5 Contest. There may not be Table Topics Session, only Project Speeches, since we have to finish it early. We apologize for any inconveniences due to the changes.
Our Area W5 International Speech & Table Topics Contest (UM TMC is in area W5) details are as the following:
Date : 11th March 2009 (Wednesday) Time : 7.00 pm Venue : MAICSA Building, 3rd Floor, No. 57, MidValley Boulevard. (beside Midvalley Megamall)
As you all know, our Champions of UM International Speech & Table Topics Contest - CC Kimmy Foo and TM KungShyh Yu will be contesting in the area level contest. All UM TMC members are highly encouraged to attend the contest to have a better view of external Toastmasters Clubs and to support our contestants.
If you see our UM TMC history few months ago, we (CC Deborah Chow) were the Champion of the Area W5 Level for Division W Humorous Speech Contest 2008/2009. However, we stopped at area level due to some unavoidable reasons. This time, we will strive for excellence. Kimmy and Shyh Yu, we, UM TMC are depending on you.
The officers of UM TMC will meet up on this Tuesday to decide on the schedule of our Wednesday meeting on 11th March since it's clashing with our area contest. Yes, we know it's kind of last minute. So, please surf our blog on Wednesday morning for a confirmed schedule of the meeting.
Members can either go directly to the venue of area contest or you can follow us by our cars. If you would like to follow us, we need your reservation before 10 pm on this Tuesday, 10th March 2009, so that we can plan on this. Simply sms your reservation to Rishi (0173067180) before 10pm this Tuesday.
‘Fun in the Sun’ was the theme for the meeting held on 4th March 2009. Why did we choose this theme? It’s because it was cold and rainy for the past few days. So we decided to make it ‘hot’. Surprisingly, the day we had our ‘Fun in the Sun’ meeting, the weather was quite clear (maybe it was caused by the 'aura' of our theme..hehe...just joking). The word of the day was ‘Authentic’ which means genuine. Example of sentence: ‘Victor has bought an authentic Gucci sunglass for a fun in the sun party tomorrow. For the first time in UM TMC, TM Nyuk Jet was the Toastmaster of the Evening. The Table Topics Master was TM Deborah Chow and she has prepared a lot of interesting questions related to the theme. She instructed all the Table Topics Speakers to choose any questions from A to N. Yes, it was A to N – a lot of questions!!! The Table Topics Speakers were
1. Siew Peng 2. Ivy Lau 3. Kimmy Foo 4. Shiva 5. Mansoor 6. Rishi… *ahem, you might know this boy*
‘Lemonade – yes or no??!!’ – that was the strict question raised by Table Topics Master to TM Rishi that scared him off. The Table Topics Evaluator of the evening was TM Teo Bee Guan with useful evaluation including - speakers not to be distracted by the audience. Allow me to shorten the following report to give way for 2 paragraphs to our new Competent Communicator. Our Project Speech Speakers were
1. CC Project #1 – Ice Breaker - ‘An Unforgettable Experience’ by TM Lau Kah Fai 2. CC Project #2 – Organize Your Speech - ‘Global Warming’ by TM Ivy Lau 3. CC Project #2 – Organize Your Speech - ‘Sleepless Night’ by TM Heng Jing Yi 4. CC Project #8 – Get Comfortable with Visual Aids - ‘To Nerd or Not To Nerd?’ by TM Deborah Chow
Evaluators on Project Speeches were
CC Kimmy for Speech 1 DTM Vincent Hor for Speech 2 and 4 ATMB Christine Ong for Speech 3
Our General Evaluator for the evening was ATMB Christine Ong from Midvalley Toastmasters Club. Thank you, GE. Our role players were as the following:
Best Table Topics Speakers award goes to….drum roll….drum roll….
MANSOOR
Congrats, Mansur. We would like to see you again in action for our upcoming meetings.
Now, let’s go for the dedication to our new CC - Deborah Chow Yik Kuen.
I don’t quite know the exact month when TM Deborah became the member of UM TMC (it was known as TICUM at that time), and she then became the Vice President of Membership for the 2008/2009 session. She started her first speech somewhere in the beginning of the year 2008. All of a sudden, to our surprise, we got to know that she has completed 8 speeches of Competent Communication by the end of last semester. She has actually taken the initiative to present some of her speeches in external clubs, unlike most of us who prefer to present our speeches in our own club.
Let me repeat that - she has completed all the 8 speeches in one semester!! Wow!!! Today, she has completed all the 10 speeches in the CC manual. What can we say about her – she’s a natural speaker. She can think very spontaneously with suitable flow of words when presenting her speech. We, UM TMC, would like to take this opportunity to congratulate TM Deborah Chow for achieving her CC. Congrats, Deb!!!
TM DEBORAH is now CC DEBORAH
Thus, any of you would like to have two dedicated paragraphs, make sure you finish up your Competent Communication Manuals as soon as possible.
There could be some changes in our next meeting due to the upcoming area contest. So please keep surfing our blog for any information on the changes.
Date : 4th March 2009 Time : 5.15pm Venue : BSEC 101 (formely known as BTEC 001), First Floor, Block C, Education Faculty, UM.
(same time, same place as before)
Our theme would be "Fun in theSun". It has been cold and rainy for the past few evenings....so we have planned to make it 'hot' on Wednesday evening. Hope to see you in the meeting.

Now, the 3rd (final) report of the UM ISC & TTC 2009 – International Table Topics Contest 2009.
Our International Table Topics Chairperson was ACB CL Suresh Mohan (Division W Secretary and President of SaiMasters TMC). There were few questions that have been prepared by Mr. Suresh before the contest. Our Organizing Chairperson, TM Deborah Chow, had the privilege to pick a question randomly. I actually had forgotten the exact question, but the question goes something like this - ‘If a man is smoking in front of you in a non-smoking area, what would you do?’
We have altogether 6 contestants, and all of them were asked the same question. Well, you can see a lot of different answers but most of the participants said they would just avoid the smoker. Yes, it’s true if you don’t want to get into any trouble. The contestants were as the following:
1. Tham Hui Xin
2. Ras Hadi
3. Kung Shyh Yu
4. Teng Yu He
5. Ivy Lau
6. Heng Jing Yi
The Champion of the International Table Topics Contest 2009 is
KUNG SHYH YU
The 1st- Runner Up of the International Table Topics Contest 2009 is
RAS HADI
The 2nd – Runner Up of the International Table Topics Contest 2009 is
HENG JING YI
Thus, Champion will representing UM TMC for the Area W5 International Table Topics Contest and the 1st – Runner Up will be the back up if the Champion couldn’t make it to the contest.
For those who didn’t make it for champion or runner up, this is the first time and you will have more chances coming up in near future. So keep on trying and you can be the first for the next contest. For those who didn't participate, I would say that you have missed a good chance to perform in front our external experienced Toastmasters members. Do participate in the upcoming contests.
Since this is the final report, we, the officers of UM TMC, would like to congratulate our Organizing Chairperson, TM Deborah Chow, for leading the way in organizing a fabulous contest.
It was our first club contest and glad to say that we have obtained good comments and feedbacks from our external judges and role players. Overall evaluation - it was a fun and wonderful contest with ‘future professional speakers’.
We would definitely say that the contest was a complete success.
