Christmas Meeting Special

On the 18th December 2008, a Christmas meeting special was held at the MAICSA Meeting Room, The Boulevard Office, Midvalley. It was the joint meeting by 6 clubs :

1) MidValley Toastmasters Club
2) DHL Toastmasters Club
3) MAICSA Toastmasters Club
4) Ireka Toastmasters Club
5) MIA Toastmasters Club

and

6) Our UM TMC.

UM TMC was given the chance to organize the gift exchange session. Nyuk Jet and Rishi came to the venue as early as 6.00pm for the preparation of tagging gifts. In total, there were about 68 gifts received throughout the meeting and all the gifts were placed under the Christmas tree. As the meeting was on progress, the card numbers (in accordance to the total gifts received) were then distributed to the members to be chosen randomly. Thus, no one knows the gifts that he/she will be receiving. During the intermission, Jet and Rishi managed to re-arrange the gifts accordingly with some helping hands so that it would be easy to give it out. As soon as the intermission ended, they handed out the gifts quickly and succesfully.

Our President, CC Kimmy Foo, did her Advanced Communicator Manual No.3 - Story Telling with the title "The Cheerleader Who Couldn't Split". Her speech has made us forgotten all about the word of the day, as the word 'SPLIT' has dominated the meeting. Here SPLIT, there SPLIT, everywhere was the word - SPLIT. CC Kimmy Foo has been awarded as the Best Speaker of the Evening. Congrats Kimmy.

It was an exiciting joint meeting with 6 Toastmasters clubs, thanks to the main organizer - MAICSA Toastmasters Club. All the members had a smile and a gift in their hands at the end of the meeting.

UM Shifts Focus to Postgrad Studies

KUALA LUMPUR: Universiti Malaya (UM) is shifting its focus to postgraduate studies by increasing the number of places for such courses and reducing the intake of undergraduates.
New vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Ghauth Jasmon said the move was in line with the university’s efforts to boost its rankings in the Times Higher Education Supplement in the next two years.

“We want more and better postgraduates, and to reduce the number of undergraduates so that we can improve the quality of research.”UM has slipped down the ladder since 2006, when it went from 169 in 2005 to 192 in 2006. It was in 245th spot last year but rose slightly to 230th this year.

Prof Ghauth, who was appointed on Nov 10, said: “I’m working to attract first-class honours graduates to come and do research and improve the quality of research. “We also want more people to be involved in research; this will be the key performance index for measuring their academic performance.” Prof Ghauth said that first-class graduates would be offered postgraduate scholarships immediately.

Prof Ghauth also said he was bringing experts into niche areas which he wanted UM to develop, such as in medicine, engineering, business and economics. On the decline in the quality of UM graduates compared to its heyday, he said it was a national problem. “People mainly attribute it to poor communication skills, but one method employed by UM to alleviate the problem is to teach more subjects in English as well as conduct course work and assignments in English,” he said.

According to him, the poor ability to interact affected the marketability of graduates. Prof Ghauth said this could be remedied with community work which was a good training ground for leadership and social skills. “For example, if they do community work, we must give them marks for these. If they do work for their kampungs, that must be recognised.” He said this could be done by widening the choices of co-curricular activities. He also called on the student affairs division to come up with ideas for student participation outside the classroom.

UM V-C Aims for Top 200

KUALA LUMPUR: Universiti Malaya’s (UM) new vice-chancellor has set a top 200 target in the Times Higher Education-QS (THE-QS) World University Rankings in two years’ time and top 100 in five years.

Prof Datuk Dr Ghauth Jasmon (pic) said he was confident that it was achievable.
“This year’s THE-QS rankings show that we are still the best in Malaysia while UM was the only public university to receive five stars in the Rating System for the Malaysian Higher Education Institutions (Setara),” he said in an interview at his office.

UM rose in the THE-QS World University Ranking, from 246 in 2007 to 230 this year.
“I have come here to ensure we remain the best and keep on rising in the rankings, but my biggest challenge now is to transform the university and take it to a higher level.”

Prof Ghauth, who was formerly Multimedia University (MMU) president, was appointed UM vice-chancellor on Nov 8, replacing Datuk Rafiah Salim whose contract had expired.
His plan is to ensure that UM has quality research, publications and staff. Bringing in first-class graduates is also top priority.

Prof Ghauth said the university was setting up a unit to meet with first-class honours degree graduates from all public and private universities to encourage them to lecture at UM.
Stressing entrepreneurship was a vital element, Prof Ghauth said he was creating a scheme for staff and students to market their business ideas.

At MMU, he said staff and students were allowed to own businesses and also received funding.
“We are also arranging a roadshow to top schools and matriculation centres where I will speak to prospective students about studying at UM. The personal touch is very important.
“I want to meet them to explain why an academic career can be rewarding and fulfilling,” he said, adding that he had done this at MMU.

Prof Ghauth, 52, said he did not apply for the job of the UM vice-chancellor, adding: “I got a call from the Higher Education Ministry to attend an interview and was asked what I would do if I was given the job. It was too big an offer to refuse.”

“Never in my wildest dreams did I think I would be asked to come back as I had gone to the private sector.”Prof Ghauth had previously served at UM for 14 years. His last appointment was as deputy vice-chancellor (Development) in August 1995. Since starting his duties on Nov 11, he has been busy meeting the deans and directors.

Preparing for a Job Interview

The most important element in obtaining a job is the job interview. Potential employers look for candidates that are confident, sharp and equipped for the position. The interview process offers job seekers an opportunity to rise to the top of the candidate pool. Often several equally qualified candidates apply for the same position, which makes the interview session even more important. Here are a few tips to help you prepare for your next job interview.

Instructions
Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1: Update your resume.
If your work history, eduction or personal information has changed since applying for the job, make the necessary corrections on your resume and application. Bring a copy of your updated resume to the interview.

Step2: Learn everything you can about the organization.
Research company history, products, services and goals. Being able to display a working knowledge of the industry is impressive to potential employers.

Step3: Know your strengths and weaknesses.
Study your resume and be ready to defend any gaps in employment or lack of degrees. Also be prepared to sell yourself by highlighting related strengths, skills and experience.

Step4: Prepare a few questions for the interviewer.
Don't talk too much, but do ask relevant questions as the opportunity arises. Actively participating in the interview process will display a desire to learn more about the company and the position.

Step5: Practice your presentation.
A day or two before the interview, have a friend or family member interview you several times. They should ask a few tough questions in addition to obvious ones. Make adjustments to your presentation as necessary.

Step6: Decide what you are going to wear.
Depending on the position, some companies have stricter dress codes than others. A suit works well for most interviews. If in doubt, wear a nice pair of dress slacks or skirt and a traditional button-up shirt or blouse. Make sure your shoes are not scuffed or dirty.

Step7: Get a good night's sleep.
Don't drink too much alcohol, and go to bed early the night before the interview. Eat a good breakfast the next morning to avoid a growling stomach. Arriving at the interview refreshed and alert will make a good impression.

Your preparation should revolve around the following aspects. Click accordingly:

Einstein's Proven Right After 103 Years !!!

Einstein is proven right after 103 years!!! He's way too far from us. Please read the article below:

PARIS (AFP) – It's taken more than a century, but Einstein's celebrated formula e=mc2 has finally been corroborated, thanks to a heroic computational effort by French, German and Hungarian physicists.

A brainpower consortium led by Laurent Lellouch of France's Centre for Theoretical Physics, using some of the world's mightiest supercomputers, have set down the calculations for estimating the mass of protons and neutrons, the particles at the nucleus of atoms. According to the conventional model of particle physics, protons and neutrons comprise smaller particles known as quarks, which in turn are bound by gluons.

The odd thing is this: the mass of gluons is zero and the mass of quarks is only five percent. Where, therefore, is the missing 95 percent? The answer, according to the study published in the US journal Science on Thursday, comes from the energy from the movements and interactions of quarks and gluons. In other words, energy and mass are equivalent, as Einstein proposed in his Special Theory of Relativity in 1905.

The e=mc2 formula shows that mass can be converted into energy, and energy can be converted into mass. By showing how much energy would be released if a certain amount of mass were to be converted into energy, the equation has been used many times, most famously as the inspirational basis for building atomic weapons. But resolving e=mc2 at the scale of sub-atomic particles -- in equations called quantum chromodynamics -- has been fiendishly difficult.
"Until now, this has been a hypothesis," France's National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) said proudly in a press release. "It has now been corroborated for the first time."

For those keen to know more: the computations involve "envisioning space and time as part of a four-dimensional crystal lattice, with discrete points spaced along columns and rows."

First Fuzzy Photo of Planets Outside Solar System

This could be interesting...

WASHINGTON – Earth seems to have its first fuzzy photos of alien planets outside our solar system, images captured by two teams of astronomers. The pictures show four likely planets that appear as specks of white, nearly indecipherable except to the most eagle-eyed experts. All are trillions of miles away — three of them orbiting the same star, and the fourth circling a different star.

None of the four giant gaseous planets are remotely habitable or remotely like Earth. But they raise the possibility of others more hospitable.

It's only a matter of time before "we get a dot that's blue and Earthlike," said astronomer Bruce Macintosh of the Lawrence Livermore National Lab. He led one of the two teams of photographers.

"It is a step on that road to understand if there are other planets like Earth and potentially life out there," he said.

Macintosh's team used two ground-based telescopes, while the second team relied on photos from the 18-year-old Hubble Space Telescope to gather images of the exoplanets — planets that don't circle our sun. The research from both teams was published in Thursday's online edition of the journal Science.

In the past 13 years, scientists have discovered more than 300 planets outside our solar system, but they have done so indirectly, by measuring changes in gravity, speed or light around stars.

NASA's space sciences chief Ed Weiler said the actual photos are important. He compared it to a hunt for elusive elephants: "For years we've been hearing the elephants, finding the tracks, seeing the trees knocked down by them, but we've never been able to snap a picture. Now we have a picture."

In a news conference Thursday, Weiler said this fulfills the last of the major goals that NASA had for the Hubble telescope before it launched in 1990: "This is an 18 1/2-year dream come true."

There are disputes about whether these are the first exoplanet photos. Others have made earlier claims, but those pictures haven't been confirmed as planets or universally accepted yet. The photos released Thursday are being published in a scientifically prominent journal, but that still hasn't convinced all the experts. Alan Boss, an exoplanet expert at the Carnegie Institution of Washington, and Harvard exoplanet hunter Lisa Kaltenegger both said more study is needed to confirm these photos are proven planets and not just brown dwarf stars.

New Vice Chancellor for UM

PETALING JAYA: Former Multimedia University (MMU) president Prof Datuk Dr Ghauth Jasmon has been appointed Universiti Malaya (UM) vice-chancellor effective today. Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said he was convinced that Prof Ghauth was the “right vice-chancellor for the university at the present time”.
“This is because he was formerly from UM and has experience leading a private university,” he said when contacted in Britain. Mohamed Khaled said he hoped Prof Ghauth would be able to continue to strengthen and shape UM into a world class university. Prof Ghauth replaces Datuk Rafiah Salim whose contract has expired.

Rafiah, the first woman to head a public university, was initially appointed in May 2006. Her tenure was extended for another six months from May this year. Higher Education Department director-general Prof Datuk Dr Radin Umar Radin Sohadi said the appointment of Prof Ghauth was based on an independent search committee and believed that he could further transform the university.

When contacted in Indonesia, Prof Ghauth said he was honoured and thankful for his appointment and that he would begin his duties next Tuesday. “I can’t wait to start work to get UM back into the top class again,” he said, adding that he retired from MMU at the end of last year after serving as president for 11 years.

He then took over as Unity College International chief executive officer in January this year. Unity College International board of governors chairman Emeritus Prof Datuk Dr Sham Sani congratulated Prof Ghauth stating that the appointment was too big an opportunity for him to turn down.

How to Improve Communication Skills

Difficulty: Moderate
Step1
Think before you speak. Plan your presentations and other addresses to groups whenever possible, especially in business. Even if you don't know everything you want to say, you should have a general idea. In more private conversations, take the time to be clear about the points you want to make before talking. Always be honest in your communication.
Step2
Be an active listener. Listening is often more important than speaking. To improve your communication skills, pay attention to what others are saying without getting distracted.
Step3
Make good eye contact. Shifty eyes make you seem less than trustworthy in business and personal life. If you are looking everywhere but in the eyes of your audience, it will arouse suspicion. This doesn't mean you should initiate a staring contest. Just make sure to put your audience at ease by holding the gaze at times.
Step4
Take it slow. Don't slur your words together or mumble. Enunciate. If you speak too fast, then you'll lose your audience. Use words only if you are sure of their meaning. Make yourself easily understood.
Step5
Use appropriate volume and tone. Of course, you should speak louder when addressing a group than you would in private conversations. Reflect emotion in your voice. A monotone approach is never appropriate in any setting.
Step6
Practice; it's the best way to improve your communication skills. The more you do it, the easier it will get.

Happy Diwali!!!

UM TMC would like to take this oppertunity to wish all Hindus a very Happy Diwali.

DEEPAVALI VALTUKKAL!!!

Sincerely from,

UM TMC.

Happy 84th Birthday, Toastmasters International!!!

Twelfth Meeting - Deepavali

It was our twelfth and final meeting of the semester 1, 2008/2009, on 22nd October 2008. The theme of the meeting was ‘Deepavali’ as the festival of lights will be celebrated next week on 27th October 2008. The word of the day was ‘Extravagant’, which means – going beyond what is deserved or justifiable. Example of sentence: Grace will be extravagant in buying cakes when she’s at the bakery shop.

We started off the meeting with the welcoming speech by Vice President of Education, TM Bee Guan. Then the floor was taken over by Toastmaster of the Evening, TM Rishi. He, who was the ‘start-end’ TME of the semester, explained briefly about the history of Toastmasters and the legend behind Deepavali. Why ‘start-end’? Hmmm…It was because he was the TME for the first meeting and the final meeting of the semester, co-incidently.

Next was the Table Topics Session by TM Bee Guan. The questions were related to the celebration of Deepavali. The table topics speakers were Hadi, Kimmy, Ter, Arrisa, and Qin Mei. They all did well in their table topics and none of them intended to change the questions given. However, for the first time in UM TMC meeting, there were actually two table topics evaluators in the session, as Kimmy, our initial Table Topics Evaluator, suddenly volunteered herself to be the speaker. This has pushed Bee Guan as the Table Topics Evaluator specially dedicated for Kimmy.

After that, it was the project speech session. Our speaker of the day was TM Fun Mun Wah, with the title “Learning & Competency” (CC Project # 2 – Organize Your Talk). He explained about the different types of competency classes that humans are equipped in their characters. Well, some secrets were out from the audience when he was communicating with them while presenting his speech. Want to know more about the secrets? Hmm, I guess not.

Then, our General Evaluator, TM Qin Mei, from the HELP University College, took over the control. She was also the Speech Evaluator for TM Fun. Thank you, Qin Mei, for coming to our meeting as the evaluator all the way from HELP Damansara.

Not to forget our role players, TM Terrence (Ah Counter), TM Grace Kang (Grammarian), and TM Nyuk Jet (Time Keeper for the first time). All of you were great.

Next was the award time for the best Table Topics Speaker…….drum roll….drum roll….drum roll…..

KIMMY FOO !!!

Congrats, Kimmy. Oh..oh..I almost forgotten again…Dear President, can we have a humor session around the month of January where only the Officers of UM TMC with Competent Communicator should take part?

Finally, it was the closing speech of the semester by the President. Dear all, we at UM TMC would like to take this opportunity to wish good luck for your final examinations. Study smart and you will definitely pass in flying colors. We would start our meetings again when the new semester begins.

Please log in to our blog continuously for more information on our upcoming meetings in the next semester.

The Experience of Being a Test Speaker for Division Contest

The Division C Humorous Speech & Evaluation Contest was held on 18 Oct 2008 at SEGI University College. I would like to share the real experience of being a test speaker of a division contest.

Well, the division contest was a little different from the area or club contest. This is because the competing participants were chosen from the best speakers from their respective areas. Thus, the quality of the speech presented by each participant for the humorous contest was rather high. As I was concentrating on their humorous speeches, I (as the test speaker) told to myself that I need to upgrade my speech to a level where it would be applicable for a division contest. I begun to think fast the ways that could improve my speech as the time for my presentation was getting closer. But there was nothing much modification that could be done at the last minute.

Strangely, I did not feel the nervousness during the refreshment period just after the completion of humorous speech. However, when everyone was called back to the hall to start the evaluation contest, I could feel the nervousness starting to grow up in my body. The hall was full of audiences. I waited quietly till my name was called to present my speech.

Standing on the stage, in front of the audiences, I started to present my speech. The introduction part was quite difficult for me as I was still in nervous position. But then, the body and the conclusion went smoothly as I could feel myself getting normalized to the situation as I went through the speech. ‘Thank you’ was the final sentence of my speech and it was over.

My speech title was “The Priceless Glory of the Atmosphere”, a brief explanation about the formation of clouds, its categories, rain and lightning. It was actually the English version of the speech that I had presented in Bahasa Malaysia during the UM TMC club meeting of the theme “Hari Raya’ with some modifications.

Next was the evaluation session. Five competing participants evaluated on my presentation. There were two similarities of evaluation points from all the evaluators.

(a) I was really passionate in presenting about clouds
(b) It would be better to use the visual aids

Other than that, all the evaluators have different points of view and it would definitely help me to improve my public speaking in the upcoming sessions. Thank you, evaluators for the concrete points of improvement.
I would say that it was a fantastic experience of being a test speaker in a division contest. I will be looking forward to other division contests for a different and new experiences.

Sorry, I didn't capture any photos.

TM Rishi
VPPR,
UM TMC.

Eleventh Meeting - Black Tie

Our eleventh meeting was held on 15 Oct 2008. The theme of this meeting was ‘Black Tie’. However, no one was wearing the black tie or even the yellow tie. One of our members was wearing the blue tie with black-coloured blazer. I guess those who came to our meeting would have known the mentioned member. Yes, it was our very smart looking Toastmaster of the Evening, TM Fun Mun Wah. Nonetheless, there was also a member who was wearing all black, even though at first he thought of wearing a yellow tie with smileys on it. But due to some unavoidable reasons, he did not wear the yellow tie.

The meeting was started at 5.29 pm with the President’s welcoming speech. CC Kimmy Foo told us that UM was chosen as the best university in Malaysia during the recent QS World University Rankings 2008. It was a good news for all of us. Next, it was the Table Topic Session by our President. The questions were more to current situations in Malaysia (non-political) and it actually made us to think. Most of our Table Topics Speakers were first timers and well done speakers. It was a good start. The Table Topics Evaluation was done by ACB Christine Ong and we learned a few new things from the evaluation.

After that, it was the main session – Project Speeches. The project speakers of the meeting were as the following:

CC Project #2 – Organize Your Talk by TM Nyuk Jet – “2 Minutes Friends”
CC Project #3 – Get to the Point by TM Pang – “Four Characters That Make You Fail in Life”

Nyuk Jet was advising us not to take instant noodles as it is bad for our health. There are no nutrients in it. So students, especially student, and yes students – Please reduce instant noodles as food intake. On the other hand, TM Pang explained on different characters of people that would make them fail. The point that caught all of us was – ‘Talk a lot but no actions’. Hmmm, if you noticed, we members are really talkative, but..hmmm…lets move on.

Our General Evaluator, ACB Christine Ong (from Mid Valley Toastmasters) took over the floor for the whole evaluation of the meeting. There were two of our Toastmasters guests all the way from Stamford College Toastmasters Club – CC Grace Chong and TM Joshua George. CC Grace Chong was the speech evaluator for TM Nyuk Jet and TM Joshua George was the speech evaluator for TM Pang. Thank you evaluators for your time and effort.

Great job on the role players TM Rebekah (Ah Counter), TM Rishi (Grammarian) and TM Bee Guan (Time Keeper). Not to forget our fully prepared TME, TM Fun. [In this meeting, the Grammarian has escaped from paying the Treasurer for the pause fillers. Hehe.]

As TM Fun said, it was the dessert time – Best Table Topics Speaker………drum roll…drum roll……

FAIZ!!

Congrats, Faiz!!! See you in the next meeting.

Oh, before I forget, Dear President, should we have a meeting with the theme “Smileys” where everyone should wear something with smileys on it?? Just imagine if we all wear a smileys T-shirt to the meeting, we would definitely look like.........You have guessed it.

A Good Year

Malaysian universities improved considerably in the THE-QS World University Rankings 2008 after last year’s steep slide.

THERE was good news for Malaysian public universities this year in the Times Higher Education (THE)-QS World University Rankings 2008.

Although none made it to the top 200, four out of five improved on their positions, namely Universiti Malaya (UM), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM).

Only Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) which, ironically, attained apex (accelerated programme for excellence) status this year, went down in the rankings.

USM dropped by six places to 313 in the list, while UM maintained its position as the highest-ranked local university for the second year when it improved by 16 positions to 240.

UKM and UTM rose a whopping 59 places to attain the 250 and 356 spots, respectively. UPM also rose a credible 44 places to reach 320 in the rankings.

Giving a speech in an auditorium

Universiti Malaya Tmc was once again invited to be a test speaker and this time, we decided to send our dear VPE, TM Bee Guan to give the participants a little run for their money.

TM Bee Guan, our ever conscientious and dedicated VPE got into his stride with the challenge to be a test speaker for the Area C4 contest held in Summit Auditorium, Summit USJ.

He got his speech prepared and was rather nervous as it was his first time being a test speaker. He even skipped the refreshments which were prepared. His hands were cold and then, the moment arrived..

"..invite our test speaker for today..TM Teo Bee Guan with his title You Are What You Read!"

TM Bee Guan took the control from the contest chair and began with his speech on reading. On how, these days, the younger generation would rather read entertainment news instead of more beneficial news or books that feeds the mind.

"..its so bad that there are some young people who thinks that India is the short of Indonesia."

He went on with his speech which was peppered with humour and yet sprinkled with a dash of the whole issue's gravity.

It isnt an easy task to be giving a speech in auditorium because you would need to regulate your voice. Voice projection while giving a speech in an auditorium is important because people sitting behind may not be able to hear you, hence, they lose interest in listening to you.

Body language such as facial expressions, gestures, pacing are all packaged into a slightly difficult task because you need to add a little more drama or else, the people behind wouldnt feel the impact of the speech.

Besides that, the fact that you are on stage, an elevated platform, can give you the nerves!

And TM Bee Guan showed us that sheer determination with Toastmasters training, is not an issue at all as he wow-ed the audience and made UM Tmc so proud.

Congratulations Dear VPE! Keep the momentum going and know that we are so proud of you!

Tenth Meeting - Hari Raya Aidilfitri

It's our 10th meeting on 8 October 2008 and was started at 4.54 pm. The theme of the meeting was Hari Raya Aidilfitri. The word of the day was 'Riang' which means ‘Gembira’. Well, it’s a kind of bilingual meeting. Example of sentence : 'Setiap hari Rabu merupakan hari yang riang untuk Kimmy kerana perjumpaan UM TMC akan diadakan'.

Our Toastmasters of the Evening (TME) was CC Kimmy Foo and our Table Topics Master was TM Grace Kang. Kang related the Table Topics questions to our theme of the meeting. The Table Topics Speakers who participated were TM Fun Mun Wah, TM Ras Hadi, Poh Leem, and Alvin. They explained their great experiences of having ‘raya’ together with Muslim friends including the open houses. Our Table Topics Evaluator was also done by our TME, CC Kimmy Foo.

There was one project speech by TM Rishi with the title ‘Suatu Keindahan di Atmosfera’. It was a speech in Bahasa Malaysia explaining about various types of clouds and its characteristics. The ‘Kumulonimbus’ (the rain cloud) was the cloud that really caught our attention. It was an informative speech. Besides that, it is amazing that TM Rishi could actually give a speech in Bahasa Melayu with such fluency and pause-fillers free! He must have done a lot of preparation. Good job TM Rishi!!

Next our General Evaluator, CC Leong Kok Wah, from the Malaysian Insurance Institute Toastmasters Club (MII TMC) evaluated on TM Rishi’s speech and the whole meeting. Thank you, CC Leong Kok Wah.

Not to forget our role players – Ah Counter by Poh Leem, Grammarian by TM Grace Rebekah, Time Keeper’s Report by TM Fun Mun Wah. Thank you role players. A job well done.

Finally the award for Best Table Topics Speaker……..drum roll……..drum roll………

ALVIN

Congrats, Alvin!!! Looking forward for you to participate in our next Table Topics Session too. Can't wait for our next meeting with the theme 'Black Tie'. Dear President, can we wear a yellow tie to our next meeting?

Ninth Meeting - Music

It’s our ninth meeting of the semester 1, 2008 / 2009 on 24th September 2008. The theme of the day was ‘Music’. The word of the day was ‘Harmonious’ – meaning: having a pleasant tune or harmony controlled. Example of sentence: The harmonious classical music has inspired people from one generation to the next generation. This meeting was a special meeting as there was a memorable event that happened later on.

Our Sergeant-of –Arms, TM Grace Kang called for meeting to order at 4.53pm. Our Toastmaster of the Evening was TM Deborah Chow. She introduced the theme and the role players before handing over the floor to the Table Topics Master – TM Teo Bee Guan. For the first time in the Table Topic Session, we actually had the music being played and it was a very innovative idea of Bee Guan. To choose the Table Topics Speakers, a hat was passed as the music was being played. The person who was holding the hat when the music stopped was the Table Topics Speaker. We had four Table Topics Speakers who participated from the members and guests (and yes, they were the lucky ones). The Table Topics Evaluator, CC Khoo Suat Hong, then evaluated on the way of improvement for all our Table Topics Speakers.

Next, it was time for the main agenda – the Project Speeches, as the following:
1. CC Project #3 – “Beware – It’s Live” – by TM Rishi Ganesh
2. CC Project #4 – “A dedication” – by TM Grace Kang
3. CC Project #10 – “Suicide is an Escape” – by TM Kimmy Foo

TM Rishi explained about the interview session while TM Grace Kang and TM Kimmy inspired us on their life experiences. Do you still remember about the memorable event that I wrote at the beginning of this report? Yes, it was the finishing speech of the Competent Communicator Manual for TM Kimmy Foo (or I would say, CC Kimmy Foo). The next two paragraphs of this report is a special dedication to CC Kimmy.

TM KIMMY is now CC KIMMY

Kimmy is our beloved President of UM Toastmasters Club and she is the first member to receive the Competent Communicator (CC) in our club for this new term. She was on a fast track and completed her remaining seven speeches in just 3 months. We, all of the members of UM TMC, are very proud of her. Keep on leading the way, Kimmy.

Send this free eCard
Send this eCard !

Kimmy inspired us all on the topic of suicide. Yes, you are right, Kimmy. Suicide is NOT the best solution for any problems, (even if we feel depressed up to the maximum, we must not take this decision). There are always the loved ones and friends who are willing to share the burden with us. Let’s take it as a challenge of life. Say ‘NO’ to suicide.

Thus, any member who wants two paragraphs in the report dedicated just for them, please finish up your Competent Communicator Manual as fast as possible. Dear President, is it alright if 4 paragraphs dedicated for me when I got the CC later on?

Then, our General Evaluator of the evening, CTM CL Dr. Sharon (from Womens Institute of Management TMC) took over the meeting. Our speech evaluators were CC Khoo Suat Hong (The Malaysian Institue of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators TMC), our very own, TM Deborah (from UM TMC) and ACS CL Renganathan (Ernst & Young TMC). Our roles players were TM Fun, TM Ras Hadi, and TM Pang. Dear Stephanie, we would not miss you out. Thank you all for the support.

Not to forget our honorable guests Prof. Madya Dr. Umaiyah Hj Umar, Puan Rosenun Che Sof and Miss Maria Cristiana (our UM lecturers) who have made their effort to attend our meeting. We were really happy to have our lecturers in the meeting. Thank you.

Finally it was the award giving session…..The Best Table Topics Speaker goes to….drum roll…..drum roll…..

MARIUM

Congrats Marium!!! Hope you have enjoyed the meeting together with all of us.

Eighth Meeting - Acronym

The eighth meeting was held on 17th Sept 2008. I will be making some changes in this report to make it the theme report - Acronym, unlike other meeting reports.

The meeting was started at 4.48 pm and our gorgeous President, TM KF, gave a welcoming speech and continued to play the role of TME. The theme of the day Acronyms....hmmm.....there will be a lot of acronyms in this report - so be prepared not to confuse yourself.

Next was the TTS by TM FMW. There were altogether five speakers of the TTS - ACS CL MM, TM HS,TM GRT, CC KS,TM P. The questions were quite challenging and some were complicated. I still couldn't figure out some of the questions till now. Good move TM FMW, you really made the TTS speakers to think at a high range. The TTE was done by CC KSH from MAICSA TMC. Thank you CC KSH.

The project speeches were as the following:

1. Ice Breaking - titled "AVOFT" - by TM FMW
2. Ice Breaking - titled "About Me" - by TM NJ
3. Inspire Your audience - titled "Courage to Conquer" by TM DCYK

Congrats to TM FMW and TM NJ for presenting their first speech confidently. It's the first move to the world of Toastmasters. For TM DCYK, well done on your approx 10 minutes speech. This speech has showed us your true credibility that you are prepared to represent our area for the upcoming contest.

Feel confused with the acronyms? Hold on....Still more to go.....

Thank you to our speech evaluators ACB CL CO (from Mid Valley TMC), ACS CL MM, and CC KS (from DKC TMC). We are pleased to have you in the meeting. Not to forget, our GE of the evening - CC JG (from UNITAR TMC).

The other role players were TM TC as AC, TM RH as G, and TM RG as TK.

Finally, it was the TTBS.......drum roll......drum roll........Dear President, can we get a drum for real as it would be rambunctious for our upcoming meetings?.......oh, forgotten.......drum roll...drum roll.....

Meyyappa

Congrats Meyyappa!!!! You were our TTBS for the meeting. Now let us expand all the acronyms.

TM KF - Kimmy Foo
TME - Toastmaster of the Evening
TTS - Table Topics Session
TM FMW - Fun Mun Wah
ACS CL MM - Meyyappa Manickam
TM HS - Hui Shan
TM GRT - Grace Rebekah Teh
CC KS - K Shan
TM P - Pang
TTE - Table Topics Evaluation
CC KSH - Khoo Suat Hong
TM NJ - Nyuk Jet
TM DCYK - Deborah Chow Yik Kuen
ACB CL CO - Christine Ong
CC JG - Julian Gan
TM TC - Terrence Chong
TM RH - Ras Hadi
TM RG - Guess who?
AC - Ah Counter
G - Grammarian
TK - Time Keeper
GE - General Evaluator
TTBS - Table Topics Best Speaker
WOD - Word of the Day
DKC - Deloitte KassimChan
UNITAR - Universiti Tun Abdul Razak
TM - Toastmaster
CC - Competent Communicator
CL - Competent Leader
ACB - Advanced Communicator Bronze
ACS - Advanced Communicator Silver

Whoa!!! That's a long way to go.

Before I forget- the WOD was Rambunctious...(not Rambutan, please take note)...meaning - noisy, full of energy, behaving in a way that cannot be controlled.

UM TMC at the TELEKOM TMC Contest

We have been at the Mid Valley, HELP, Deloitte, SJMC and MII Toastmasters (Club and Area) Contests. The list goes on as we were at the TELEKOM Toastmasters Club for their Humorous Speech & Evaluation Contest last Friday.

TM Grace Kang was the test speaker, while TM Kimmy and TM Rishi were two of the judges in the contest. It was actually the first experience for TM Kimmy and TM Rishi to be the judge in a contest.

TM Grace Kang presented her speech title 'Small Steps' for the second time as test speaker in order to improve the areas that have been commented by contest evaluators of SJMC previously.

This time, Grace looked more confident in delivering her speech. There was no tense or nervousness in her eyes. Moreover, she did not refer to any papers or notes during the presentation. Obviously, she had prepared well for a better performance. Good job, Grace!!! You have shown a quick and tremendous improvement in just a short period of time. Keep it up.

Meanwhile, for Kimmy and Rishi, being a judge for the first time has taught some points and methods of evaluating contestants. It also taught them the characteristics of a contestant that the judges will look for in a contest. It was a great experience for all of us in the TELEKOM TMC HS & EC.

Seventh Meeting - Lantern Festival

It was 10th September 2008 and we had our seventh meeting of the semester. The theme was Lantern Festival. Lantern festival is a Chinese festival that falls on the 15th day of the first month in the Lunar year. There will be a lot of moon cakes served during the festival, so don't miss out any of it.

The word of the day was 'Auspicious' - meaning: a positive and successful future. For example, "They won their first match of the season 5-1 which was an auspicious beginning".

The meeting was started at 4.50 pm with President's welcoming speech. Our Toastmaster of the Evening was TM Bee Guan with a brief introduction on the origin of Lantern Festival.

TM Rishi was the Table Topics Master of the evening. There were six table topics speakers in the session and all of them did a great job. Some of the questions were - 'Do you like mooncakes and why?', 'What will be the difference between a chocolate cake and a mooncake?', and 'How do you celebrate the lantern festival?'. There was also an imaginative bonus question - 'What do you think will happen if the Earth doesn't have a moon?'. Now that could be a tough one. But could you see a similarity if compared to previous table topics sessions? Yes, we can't stop mentioning about the food. The past - ABC & ice cream, the present - chocolate cake & mooncake. I would say it was a co-incidence. The Table Topics Evaluator was DTM Vincent Hor with evaluations on areas to be improved by the table topics speakers.

Next were the project speeches as the following:

1) CC Project 2 - "Speak Out Your Mind" by TM Pang
2) CC Project 8 - " My Journey to Macau" by TM Sze Wan
3) CC Project 8 - "The Indic Branch" by TM Kimmy Foo

Actually we learned a lot from the three speeches, how to speak out of our mind, the condition of the 'take-off terminal', and to count from 1 to 10 in Tamil. Well done project speakers. Dear President, just a thought, can we have FREE night classes to learn more about the Indian languages from you?

Thank you to our General Evaluator - Mr Renganathan from Ernst & Young TMC, our Speech Evaluators - DTM Vincent Hor from MAICSA TMC, ACB Kian Yoong from Deloitte KassimChan TMC and TM Kimmy Foo from our own UM TMC.

We also had our alumni with us in the meeting - Lee Fooi, Min En, and Sze Wan. We were glad to meet up our senior members of UM TMC. Looking forward to see you all in the upcoming meetings. Not to forget to bring together other alumni members.

Well done Terrence for becoming our time keeper. It would be the first experience for you of taking up the role player in Toastmasters.

Finally, it was the Best Table Topics Award......drum roll...drum roll....(eventhough we do not have drums)....

STEPHANIE

Congrats, Stephanie!!! You are a great speaker. Thank you for giving us the support by introducing our club to the UM students. We would really like to see you presenting your speeches soon.

Signing off,
